Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Handlebar tape: With or without adhesive?

Read this on the Aussie thread and it warmed my little Melbourne heart.

i like the keirin grips just fine, but as far as bartape goes, i hate the adhesive stuff. it's a pain in the ass to pull it tight, and when you take it off, it leaves a trail of sticky tape behind that's possibly the most annoying (bike-related) thing in the world.

I like tape that has some tack to help keep it in place, but hate it when tape is such that it just ******** GLUES itself to the bars, making it impossible to reposition or remove without tearing.

i always use cinelli tape, but before i install it i remove the adhesive strip. it leaves just enough tack to hold it in place, but also prevents the trail of glue/tape which is definitely the most annoying (bike-related) thing in the world.

I find that tightly wrapped non-adhesive tape stays in place just fine, and it's much easier to take off. Keirin grips and other tight-fitting grips are, of course, delightful (one of these days I'm giong to make padded keirin grips by cutting the ends off a bunch of Oury grips and putting them end-to-end).

rather than the oury grips, check out the ODI longneck grips. (http://www.odigrips.com/dirt_longnk.htm) they're already pretty long, and plenty comfortable.

edit: and they come in different colors.

As far as tape goes, the synthetic cork with the gummy stuff on the underside is best, stretchable, removeable and reuseable. I prefer Bontrager, tho its got the B logo all over it. I think specialized is nearly as good and no logo.

Non-adhesive works fine. If I can't find it, I don't sweat though. I buy the brand that my LBS sells. It varies and usually is from some no-name manufacturer in a 100% post-consumer recycled paper box. Damn hippies.

Sometimes I buy Cinelli, but on accident as much as anythnig.

Always cork.

Love the Profile cork tape. No adhesive, so if you want to play around with different colors and come back to what you take off you can. Also, you can toss it in the washing machine and get it good and clean.

I started this thread hoping to get some gossip on life back home - not to start such a ridiculous thread about handlebar tape.
