I have a Minoura HyperMag Alu. trainer. Whenever I use it, it shreds my tires. I rode for about 45 mins last night and when I was done I had to sweap up about 1/4 cup of shavings. Is this normal?

You may be overtightening the resistance unit on the trainer, but, yes, increased tire wear is completely normal.

increased tire wear is normal...1/4 cup of shavings is not

Wait is this the first time, or everytime it happens, that sucks

It happens every time. I put my mountain bike on it and the same thing happens. On the resistance, any less and It feels like there is no resistance, even in the biggest gear.

Not normal. Assuming your tires are in good shape (i.e., no 5 years old and perhaps dry rotting), make sure the drum of the trainer that contacts the tire is not rough (perhaps from putting your bike in the trainer with grit on the tires). If it is rough, first wash it with a citrus degreaser and then try smoothing it with very, very, very fine sandpaper, one of the pumice-type stones sold for cleaning wheel rims, and a metal polish. Flitz is a good metal polish. You should clean the sandpaper and metal polish residue off with isopropal alcohol when you are done.

I have the same model of trainer. Tweak the wheel placement knob until it is just touching the wheel. Give it a try - it can be done. You'll have some wear on the tread, but nothing like you describe.

The first winter I used the trainer, I had the knob too tight, and the tread sheared right off - the windings showed through in a number of places. The tire was obviously unsafe to use on the road. This winter there is some wear, but it's very minor. If I had to use it on the road, I would.

Thanks, I tried it and it worked, a lot less resistance, but I will have a lot more tire when I'm done!

You might also be under-tightening it. I had lots of shavings the first couple of times I used my performance brand trainer -- I think the tire was skidding against the roller and causing the tire surface to pill and shred. Once I tightened it up a couple more turns, the shredding problem disappeared.
