I am building up a Surly Cross Check with spare parts I have. I am using an Ultegra 6500 Double crank and the 109mm bottom bracket. The problem is I only have about 1mm clearance for the crank arm on the left side of the bike from the chain stay. I was wondering if there is a fix for this? Would a triple bottom bracket (118mm) space it out a bit. Also I think that the 105 bracket can be had in a 113 and was wondering if anyone knows if this will work with the Ultegra crank.

Thanks for your help.

Mattthere is no 105 113. That is a 112 and 116 xtr that will work as well as the ultegra 118.

You may be able to get a spacer to go between the right hand cup and the frame. I had one on one of my bikes years ago. This will shift your cranks to the right. If you have more clearance on the left than right, this could be an option too.

Is this a taper or splined bottom bracket?

The Ultegra is a V1 type spline, right, so would this (http://harriscyclery.net/site/page.cfm?PageID=49&SKU=CR0973) work?

To me the frustrating thing about Shimano BB is what the spindle offsets are.

Yep, I know. That's what I said in my original post. Many times there is more room on the left though. At least my bikes are like that.

Oops, I misread the original post. Thought he was having clearance issues on the right side, not left.

Think I am going to have to break down and bring it to a bike shop. Don't want to end up with a buch of bottom brackets I can't use.
