I've been browsing the fixed gear gallery a lot and noticed that many of them have a little colored band wrapped around the top tube. What is the purpose of these?
Here's one for example:

It kinda works like a cock ring.
to prevent scratches caused by the handlebars swinging around.
kinda like those things ppl put on walls to prevent the doorknob from bashing a hole through it.

its a top tube protector. it keeps the bars from banging up the paint on the top tube when/if they swing all the way around. a njs top tube protector costs from 25 to 30 bucks, you can get them at www.businesscycles.com and several other places. i made mine with bar wrap and electric tape.
yup mine is electrical tape

I prefer muppet fur for a toptube protector

WHOA.... I love The State... somewhat recall the muppet skit.
Back to the tape. Get some extra rim tape and some colored elec. tape. Pad it with the rim tape and cover it with the colored tape... BINGO!
