I have a BMX freewheel on my SS. It's uses a Surly Fixxer and I've finally got a lockring and track cog. Can I use the same BB tool to remove the BMX freewheel that I also use on the track cog.

the typical bmx freewheel needs park tool fr-6 for removal.

the best method i have found for even the stuckest of bmx freewheels is to put the tool on the axle, put the axle nut on untill it's against the tool, back it off 1/2 turn or so, put the tool in a vise, grab the wheel and act like you're driving a bus with no power steering. once you break that puppy loose, remove the axle nut then remove the freewheel by hand or with the tool by hand if it sticks a bit.

depends on the freewheel...

i've pulled freewheels with lockring spanners before...

he could also have a cassette-type BMX freewheel, which are becoming much more common these days, than the old 4-prong type.

On a surly fixxer? Really, me t'inks you be fibbing... :p Seriously, Park Fr-6 as mentioned above - definitely the correct tool if its an ACS freewheel

aaah....i didn't see that it was ON the surly fixxer, i thought he meant he had just got a surly fixxer and wanted to put it on...my bad.

also, him asking if it was the same tool as a BB threw me off a bit, because a cassette lockring and the splines on a bottom bracket look somewhat similar, and i know that the upper groups on campy use the same tool for the BB as for the cassette lockring.

Just buy the proper tool, or have the LBS do it for you, and don't dick around with any other method than the proper tool. You will be gald you used the proper tool.

Yeah, it's an ACS. Thanks for the input fellas. Guess I need yet another tool...

I'm good to go. Got my cog and lockring on today. Man, ridie fixie's gonna take some getting used to. I almost fell off just getting on. Guess you can't coast and then pedal...
