Did you hit your head again? When the hell will you have time to grab a bottle on a DH course?

ya that would be why no dh bikes hae water bottle mounts, because you either wear a hyration pack or for short rides like raiyn said when do yoou have time on a Dh course to grab a water bottle

Of course that munch would have a cage on his rig. Can't get the damn fork on right why not mount a cage?

Why not... ?

Nothing saying you cant ride a DH bike on longer rides.

Other than the geometry.....and the weight....and the gearing

Well, you're not going to die from exhaustion if you ride a 50lb bike for more than 20 minutes.. hopefully.

Umm I say no to the water bottle, but Raiyn yes you can ride DH bikes long distances. I ride my DH rig everywhere I need to go because I can't get lifts to the trails. And my bike does waeigh a lot, doesn't have the best gearing and isn't the right geometry. But I have ridden it to a friends place which is between 10-15km away and the whole bloody ride was up extremely steep hills, yes it sucked (it was fun coming home :D).

As to the water bottle, I reckon it would be more prone to damage, rock hitting down tube, and also you are more likely to have serious crashes DHing . So that would only aid in making more trail trash. If you want water why not use a hydration pack?

I just use a camelback, and I don't even have a DH bike. My bike is kind of trailbike-ish, and it doesn't have any cages on it. My friend's stumpjumper doesn't even have a bottle cage on it.

The point I was going for is it's not the best of ideas. It's not the wisest thing to do, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Get a Camelbak. Waterbottle cage + DH bike = not cool in my books. Ever since i ditched my water bottle cage and got a camelbak ive never looked back.

Waterbottle cages on DH bikes are a sign of Doomsday

J-McKech
02-12-05, 04:07 PM
I'm for it for the only reason is that you can't dump water on your head from your camelbak. I don't know if you can even put a waterbottle on a DH bike but on my FR bike I'm going to put one on it just for the shear fact is that during the summer when it's 115 degrees I want to be able to pour water on my head. Call me crazy but I don't want to die.

Raiyn
02-12-05, 04:12 PM
That's well and good but we aren't talking FR bikes we're talking DH and there is no reason for them to use cages. They have a lift to the top and sag areas on the bottom.

Psh. screw fashion. If I get a DH bike it'll have atleast 2 cages, maybe 3.

It's not about FASHION. When the heck are you going to have time to grab a bottle? If you have that kind of time you damn sure aren't going hard enough and will most likely end up with 3" Gazza stripes up and down your back.

J-McKech
02-12-05, 04:19 PM
In that case Raiyn if there is a good supply of water then no don't do it. My only deal was just carry water but if theres plenty around, screw it.

DH runs aren't that long. If you need water to drink CBak's are the way to go. It's just not safe to even consider bottles.

Are you kidding me? Dude...what is wrong w/ flying down a hill covered in dirt and what not one handed? I mean holding a watter bottle isn't a big deal.. plus a camelbak weighs too much...gotta watch the weight.

<beats head against brick wall> What gives did you learn about DH from MERTON? He probably told you to attach the cage using metal strapping and rubber shims or some crap:rolleyes:

You do realize we aren't talking streets? There is no way you could survive a dh run one handed without some serious practice (there is a one armed handicap dude from cali who goes huge and races dh...but his ability is above and beyond most I have met or know) You would like get seriously hurt.

you do realize that I have elite downhill abilities...see I figure if I go one handed...I'll then wreck and have time to drink from my waterbottle. :D

I think my idea of Downhill must be a little different than some of you on here....
Maybe you'er thinking D/H is down to the end of the street.
Unless I duct taped and put a hose clamp on a waterbottle, it'd be lost within 3 mins.

yeah sure...I mean you could put all kinds of thing in a waterbottle cage...like a beer to drink if you make it to the end.

I'm thinking TRD would like to modify his helmet to take 2 cans of beer with a straw, like the "Bud" hat. And a map holder on his bars to carry a few slices home from work. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

With Picture in Picture so you can also see where you're going? That would be sweet! I once told my wife I'd put a camera on the front of the tandem with a little monitor out back so she can see where we're going. She didn't like that idea for off-road. The guys at Black Phoenix Films reckon it would be better to just put duct tape over your eyes when you ride on back in the bush.

I told PWRD he should get an xbox or some such to hook up to the handlebar-mounted TV, then he could ride down the road, playing a game over a wireless network with the person riding next to him. :P

My brother bought something like that for his gym, where you could do a virtual race online with your bike bolted to a wind trainer. In Southern California, where you can ride for about 14 hours a day if you wanted to. But you could get off mid race and get a drink from the water fountain. :D I don't think customers ever used it.

Look at it logically. Downhill bike, used on a downhill course, no time to drink and the problem will be-- When you go for the water bottle, it fell off at the 2nd or 3rd lump you hit. Use a camelback or buy your water bottles in dozens.

Brian
02-13-05, 02:29 AM
If you're talking about a DH race only bike, don't bother. But if you've got to push it up the hill then ride down several times a day during the week, maybe a water bottle wouldn't be a bad option. You could then soak your head, which you can't do with a hydro pack.

Maelstrom, does your bike look so clean and shiny because you can't take it out in teh snow?

Oh, stapfam, what do we care? We've probably got a dozen water bottle mounts between us. Plus hydro packs. I even had a 1.5L under seat pack with a tube. Kind of a combo deal.

seams like a good idea for those Night rides that the batteries go into a water bottle cage.

Really bad year here. No snow and too warm (very little snow)...we have record low snow and record high heat. I was riding my bike in January which is unheard of and thought impossible :)
