Had an accident and result is I have a broken arm and in plaster.Wont be able to get on the bike for a while but was going to get some training done on the trainer.
Will I lose much endurance by not being able to do longer workouts on the trainer?What should I focus on to keep my training going towards the start of the season?and also for not being bored senseless on the trainer.
Others that have broken bones. Roughly how long to get the plaster off and back on the road? 4-6 weeks?
Depends on what's broke. I was off for almost 6 months for a tiny bone in the wrist that doesn't heal well. I am still getting back to my post-accident capacity, but it is going a lot faster than I thought. I would say I'm about 85 % after 2 weeks of slowly increasing my time and speed.
You might ask your doctor if you can ride with the cast. My doctor said I could (but I didn't, for unrelated reasons). His exact words: "Riding a bike never hurt anybody. It's falling off that hurts. And if you do fall, try to fall on the other side so you don't mess up all my work." What a comedian!
Too bad about the arm, BikerDave. A few years back, I had two bad breaks at the elbow joint on the Ulna. I now have a big old screw and bailing wire holding that together. I was on the trainer as soon as I could climb on (about 2 weeks). They never did put plaster on. I was on the road in about 5 weeks. But every bump I hit in the road really hurt and the elbow ached after a time. It got less with time but it was nearly two years before I could ride over a bump without pain. It took me quite some time to get out of the habit of dodging bumps too.
