Mountain Biking - Some questions

Heya

So I'm probably going to get some parts for my bike. Now I wonder

1)I have a TruVativ ISIS Drive Hussefelt bottom bracket. Is that an E type or what? (Ive a feeling its not E and its an "ISIS"?
2)Also, whats the difference between and 8 spd chain and a 9 spd chain? More links?
3)Should I replace cassettes with chains? If so? How many chains for 1 cassette (aproximately
4) Do SRAM chains work with shimano cassettes and do shimano chains work with SRAM cassettes?

1. I am not sure but i believe its not E
2. 8sp means the links are wider, more links only determins the length
3. technically you should replace them both, there is not a set # its just when one wears. I dont do it, i keep my chain very clean and get great mileage.
4. SRAM and shimano stuff is interchangable, though ive heard some things about rubbing so you might as well get the full SRAM thing going anyways, its certainly cheaper.

yea i should specify that, when i said interchangable i only reffered to chain/cassette. Most other things are not

Well ISIS is a type, I'm looking at a shipping box with the types.
JIS Square or ISIS.

ISIS sizes are 108,113,118mm. If that helps.

so you're saying...his is a ISIS spline?

Truvativs are ISIS. I think they have a few square tapers but other than that they are ISIS

speaking of ISIS. Does anybody have any information on the megaexo from FSA? I started a thread on this but it never really took off with a whopping 1 reply. It keeps the ISIS interface but incorporates external bearings, for durability and stiffness. I think its an awsome idea, certainly more effficient.

-ThanksFirst off you don't have a Hussefelt bottom bracket. They may be Hussefelt CRANKS but not the bottom bracket. You'll want a Team DH http://www.truvativ.com/dh/Frame_dh_home.html Damn near bombproof.
Secondly 9 speed fits nine speed cassettes it's also narrower than 8 speed

speaking of ISIS. Does anybody have any information on the megaexo from FSA? I started a thread on this but it never really took off with a whopping 1 reply. It keeps the ISIS interface but incorporates external bearings, for durability and stiffness. I think its an awsome idea, certainly more effficient.
It's the same idea behind the new high end shimano cranks and the Rafe Face X series. It's based of an old crankset called the "Bullseye" Basically what it is is bearings that screw in seperatly like a non cartridge style BB's cups would. The BB axle is actually PART of one of the crank arms (Shimano it's the ring side, Race Face it's the non drive arm). The axle goes through the bearings and mates with it's opposite. The advatages to this is increased bearing life due to the fact your aren't confined by the BB shell and can use bigger bearings, the system is stiffer for it's weight due to the outboard position of the bearings giving a wider "platform". One otherthing I can mention is the increased axle diameter giving even more stiffness to weight.
Disadvantages? Well buying a whole new crankset and bearings to put the kit in.
Cost.
I'm not entirely sold on the crank arm and BB axle being one unit
Other than that I'll probably get one of RF's X drives next time I build a bike

E-type is when you have a plate that acts as a spacer on the bb cup drive side. The plate is what the front deraileur mounts too. If your derailuer mounts to the seat tube. You have a normal bb and spacer

Thats exactly what i was thinking...

havn't seen e type derilleurs too often. They are often on full squishys were it is nearly impossible to find anything to clamp to.

So BigHits (With multiple front chainrings) would have an E-type BB?

as a side note, I've only seen XT and XTR E-type BB's... they may have trickled down to the LX series, but I normally see them on the XT and XTR stuff.

I've been using a SRAM chain on a shimano cassette for quite a while now, no problems (yet ;) )

might as well get an SRAM cassette with your SRAM chain if you're going to replace both. If not, it won't hurt to run the SRAM chain on the Shimano cassette. Also from what I hear, SRAM chains > Shimano chains.

Well i know what it is, but on the FSA website there is a bottom bracket which lets you fit any ISIS on there. I asked their tech support about it and they confirmed this, but its the "megaexo platinum" that i have to buy. the regular megaexo is sold as the entire crankset. Do you know when its supposed to be out? The tech support guy said it should be here in a few months becuase they are out

of course when i ask what a few months is i get no response

I do pay attention, but I don't wanna screw up when I go buy a 150 dollar chainguide/bashguard.
