Commuting - Blue Collar Commuter Biker

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey, perhaps you have seen me? I am the "blue collar dude" with his work pants, jean jacket, work boots on and back pack riding to the jobsite? Yep, more and more of us trades people are riding to work. Hey where I work there are at least four of us out of 50 now riding, hope soon to have more. Mostly, I think office types "white collar" ride to work, but more of us blue collar crowd are riding to the factories, job sites, garages, hangers etc...every day.
So forget the spandex cycling outfit and fancy shoes. We don't need that crap. Just give us our bikes, helmets and we'll ride.
Just the ramblings of a mad commuter....

Glad to hear you're wearing a helmet, Marcus, as some people seem to think that the helmet has to go along with "the spandex cycling outfit and fancy shoes", which of course isn't the case.
Maybe we need to work on our image among other cyclists, as well.
Glad to have you aboard, no matter what colour your collar is!
Excellent, Marcus.
The working blue collar man is the trend setter. If more guys like you ride, bicycling will be considered even more cool and more people will be encouraged to bicycle commute as well.

yeah cool - the more the better!
i don't know if it's common or what, but here in Germany i see lots of people ON the job site riding bikes - with their hard-hats and steel-toes on they ride from one end to the other carrying a bunch of work stuff or tools or whatever on the rear rack - i think it's cool b/c it saves the energy that they would use driving their huge work rigs and is probably faster b/c a bike is easier to navigate and park...
do the construction types do that in the US? to my knowledge i've never seen it...

I see several blue collar commuters here in New Orleans. I do wish more of them would wear helmets and some reflective gear in the early pre-dawn darkness. As I have said before, blue collar commuters are the true bicycle commuters. Many of the rest of us have a choice and commute by bicycle because we enjoy it. Many of the blue collar commuters I see appear do it out of necessity. I salute all bicycle commuters.
Yes, I wear padded lycra shorts, pretty jerseys and cycling shoes. Not much over a year ago I didn't think I ever would stuff this body into such things. Then I tried it and liked it! My commute is 9 miles AM/13-20 miles PM. Sure, I could do 20 miles without padded shorts, but the padding sure does feel better.
All bicycle commuters welcome. The more, the better!
Regards,
Raymond
