Community Murder Rate?

After reading a thread by PWRDbyTRD Poll: Do you carry a gun? I am very curious about the murder rate for your community. My old city, Winnipeg is Canada’s murder capital (as well as Canada’s child poverty capital) now I live in Ottawa and it is so much safer. Last year’s murder rate was SIX not bad for a region with almost 1 million people. So do you live in a safe community or one where you are scared to venture outdoors and feel that you have to carry weapons.

I just looked up the crime stats for the city that I commute 6 miles through and found a violant crime rate per 1000 of 8.7 for 2002. That's only 19th overall for the state of NJ, so I'm feelin pretty good & safe :rolleyes:

There were no murders in my city last year. I guess I can't complain too much.

I just looked up the numbers for Dallas, and the most recent info I can find is from 2002. Dallas was ranked #10, with a rate of 15.8 per 100000 people (Houston was #13 @ 13/100000). Dallas was #8 in 2001. I feel fairly safe living where I do.

i live in a podunk idaho town with 4,000 people.......i think someone got murdered about 5 years ago when there fruit stand got robbed but thats about it. Now drive up the highway a little ways to Boise and thats a different story

I would think 1 or 2. And that was a case of an insane women killing her kids somewhere in the interior, definately not gun worthy.

Actually, thanks to the folks in Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Detroit, the Houston murder rate is beginning to look like a big "Friendly Village". I have not heard gunfire on my street in weeks. Ten years ago, it was every darned night.

Pretty low for Alexandria VA but gang violence is up. And DC/PG County MD are bad for murders, carjackings, etc.
I used to live in DC and the highlight of my run ins with criminals was catching a crack ho' in the hallway who had JUST broken into my neighbors apartment and chaing her out the building and across the park into a run-down building whre the cops finally drug her a@@ out and took her away. Ah city life!!

Murder Rates in Canada
The removal of capital punishment from the Canadian Criminal Code in 1976 has not led to an increase in the murder rate in Canada. In fact, Statistics Canada reports that the murder rate for 2003 was the lowest since 1967 at 1.73 murders for every 100,000 population.

The total number of murders in Canada in 2003 was 548, 34 fewer than in 2002.

Murder rates in Canada are generally about a third of those in the United States.


Canadian Sentences for Murder
While proponents of the death penalty may cite capital punishment as a deterrent to murder, that has not been the case in Canada. Sentences currently in use in Canada for murder are:

First degree murder - life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years
Second-degree murder - life sentence with no possibility of parole for at least ten years
Manslaughter - life sentence with parole eligibility after seven years

Beaufort County, SC (120,000) is fairly low, around 5-10 a year. Nearby Savannah, GA averages about 12 a month.

I heard that houston has one of the highest rates.

Ottawa is not a very big city, though, about half a million? Here in Montreal we usually have about 50 murders a year. In the past few years it's usually been around 48-52. We're about 2 million here, thereabouts. RIght around where I live there is a sort of 'bad' area. One guy was murdered in a laundry room,I think he was stabbed. THe thing is those guys usually kill each other over drugs, etc. You don't see a lot of random type shootings or getting caught in cross fire. It's usually between fellow criminals,or it's domestic, spouses killing each other, etc.

My community, Acton, ME has been murder free as long as I have lived here. Oh about 35 years or so. But that is not fair as we only have maybe 1200 people in the whole town.

But the state of Maine , population of around 1.1 million had the lowest murder rate in the country in 2003, about 1.2 murders per 100,000 people. What's interesting is Maine also has one of the highest gun ownership per capita ratios and some of the least restrictive gun laws. On top of that, it seems Mainers don't like wasting good ammo to kill somebody. Beating them to death or using a blade is more popular than using a gun.

New Hampshire, next door to Maine had the 3rd lowest murder rate in 2003. I only mention New Hampshire because it is literally next door, about 1/2 mile down the road. I consider it more of my community than much of Maine.

We had a shooting here back in Spetember. Recently, a kid got booted from the dorms after they found a hit-list and a shotgun in his room. No actual murders that I know of recently. But, a while ago, before my time, some girl got killed and dumped behind the schools grounds department.

Just went through this on another board. There was 1 murder in 2000 and that's it since I've been here. I've lived here for 14 years now. There were a lot of aggravated assaults though. We have about 15 bars for a town of 8000 :o

Crime rates are down since 1999, but gang activity is thriving in some neigborhoods.
