Mountain Biking - Kool stop brake pads

Are these things as good as people say? Dont they scrap off crap from your rims? Or maybe i read that somewhere else

I find Kool Stops fade noticably less than other pads and I have never noticed any excessive rim wear.

They are as good as people say, but avid pads are awesome as well.In some cases, they're cheaper too. Let's just put it this way. I have a 43 lb bike with a 120lb kid on it my department store bike outfitted with an avid single digit 5 on the front. At a high speed, im AFRAID to use the front brakes.

yea one model clears the mud off your rims.

I find that the salmon colour ones work very well with cermaic rim surfaces.

I used the yellow Kool Stop pads for a while, worked great, best pads I've ever tried. I'm currently using MEC pads which are dirt cheap (2 bucks a wheel) and also work great, although not quite as good as the Kool Stops. When they're worn I think I'll go back to the Kool Stops.

FYI, the difference between the KS or MEC pads and my stock Shimano pads was shocking. 10000000x better.

yeah the stock shimanos are CA CA! I would still be using koolstop if I hadnt switched to discs.

@#$% local lbs. No, they won't order 'advanced compound special stock items'.
Reds are nice............. I'd like to run those.
Even the block pads they make are longer and more able to flex for the toe.
Stupid, they did not chrome the hex\caps for the anchors well on my cartridge ones.
So I use Alu ones. Until they strip.. dislike alu nuts, threads die too soon.

The adaptor that supposedly clears away mud is the RimRake. I used these way back in '93 - '94 .... Man, I know alot of people "don't" have disc brakes, but if you don't then you're definitely using OLD technology. Sorry, but True....

Funny how the rim pads are even "color coded" to try & keep them attractive.

i would not call it "old technology". Nobody in my area has them, because thers no need. I do road and XC. And there are not many major descents here, 50 miles north of me there are but i dont go there.

Yeah, I suppose that comment may offend some riders. I don't mean it that way at all. It's just to me, being in the sport since '93, and witnessing all the innovations thru the years it seems like long ago when rim brakes had anything exciting to talk about. Hey, I'm not knocking rim brakes. I have 4 bikes with them right now. Two have hydraulic rim brakes though, and that does make a big difference. My '04 HARO has the disc's.

Bottom line is that the disc's are by waaaay far the best IMO. Mechnical or Hydo's.
