Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Undecided on which rim would be best for free-riding. I like a wide rim, weight is not of too much of a concern, but I don't want a steel or lead rim, and cost is a factor, but durability is of main concern. With the drops and terrain I ride, I do go through rims.
Mavic EX 823 - but how wide is it?
Mavic EX 729 - again, how wide?
Atomic Lab Trail Pimp - 34 mm wide
Sun Rims Double Track / Intense Mag - 39mm wide
Which is strongest, anyone know the width of the Mavic's? I would think the offset spacing on the spokes of a Trail Pimp make it laterally stronger for the same width, anyone else have any ideas?

you can try RHyno lites also, or Sun mammoth. One of the beefier sun rims really

Rhyno Lites aren't THAT wide... if he really wants a wide rim, I'd probably go with the doubetracks.

yeah... the doublewide is just plain huge... too bad they make the little schematic so small that you can't even really read the widths in them. :(

yea the doublewide is enourmous, i cant see any good use from it. THat does suck indeed, but you can sort of guess. Plus just look online for a place that sells them, they usually tell you

The Double Tracks are pretty wide, but the Double Wides are too wide I think. They both have very good strength from what I've heard.

Thanks for the link. Any idea on the widths of the Mavic rims?
There seems to be votes for the Atomic rims and sun rims, why is everyone turning away from the Mavic?
Thanks

sure mavic is nice, In my opinion they are very much overpriced. BRand name is the best marketing tool. Sun and velocity rims are my favorite, half the price and on par with mavic if you ask me.

@ $399 I don't think they're overpriced, but maybe you do....
Intense rims are wide, but not as strong....

the rims themselves are overpriced
In my opinion and for my style of riding, Fhyno Lites wouldn't hold up. As for the Double track and Intense MAG 30, go the MAG 30, same rim profile but there is no seam to split because it is welded. Also double wides have been known to have problems, in Aus where we have really rocky tracks side walls need to work really well, supposedly quite a few people seriously damaged the sidewalls on them.
You could also look at Dice rims, the SMO is bloody strong and cheap (in Aus), but can look dog ugly on some bikes. It is reasonably heavy though, I have one as a spare front rim. They do supposedly have a side wall which can be dented, but it is so big it doesn't matter.
Personally I would probably look at - MAG 30, maybe single track (how hard do you ride), DeeMax, Mammoth (I run these on my DH race bike)

Doubles wides get flat spots very easy, and ive seen a few atomlabs wheels battered up. I love my D321s, and the EX729s are nice....not overpriced when you wont have to replace them next season. The MAG 30 is nice, but expensive like the 729s......check out Halo rims, or wheelset...very nice. My friend just picked up a set of 24inch 48spoke white ones for his banshee....beautiful.

Yeah Halos are definetely the pimpest rims ive seen. White rims with 44 black spokes....pimp.

I think the Double Wides are too wide, the only time I would consider that rim is if I was biking on snow and wanted a wide footprint.
I have looked several places online, anyone know the width of the singletrack? What about durability compared to the Intense? Weight seems to be down on the singletrack, and its cheaper.

What hub can take 44 spokes? I am curious

Would BMX hubs work for 26" rims?

Deemax's, MAG 30s or my vote is with the EX729. Ive had one on my bike for a while now and its had a fair beating- it has copped its fair share of cases. Still true and no flat spots and wide, just like you specified.
