Mountain Biking - Disc/ V brakes

I was wondering...Is it possible to put both V brakes and Disc brakes on? I don't mean 1 in front and 1 in rear, I mean both at the same time (a total of 4 brakes). Like, in the front, could you put disc and v brakes on at the same time?

Sure, you can, but why? Get a mechanical disc and one of those cable splitters the BMX kids use for gyros and you can have one lever activate both brakes.

That was one of those "talking to a brick wall" threads.

I remember pondering the V-brake/Disc setup with those BMX cable splitter things. Its not worth the trouble to get the brakes setup and synchronized IMO.

Well as a bonus I explain slander to someone I haven't seen afterwards in that thread as well. :D

If you're gonna waste your time doing something like that, at least do dual discs on the front, so that it looks like a motorcycle.

It's still not going to do you a hell of a lot of good, but if you made a dual-disc hub, at least it'd be some good machining practice.

Pair that with a dual-drive hub and you're set :)

I for one, never even considered that idea.... Maybe kinda like rear suspension and stiff front fork.... Why?

Ya know, I think that I saw a photo of this set-up once back in the day, from the old eliminator races at Mammoth mountain. Pretty sure it used the old formula hydraulic discs and magura rim brakes with a hose splitter. Mind you, this was back when discs had nowhere near the grab that they do these days. I remember distinctly the dual-disc set-ups, I even have a ‘97 Z1 (still in use) with the tabs for the right-side AND left-side disc calipers.

As for the idea hey, why not? Everyone and their dog is running 8" rear rotors these days, and pretty much everyone agrees that the front is where the power is. Another front rotor would compound the wheel dish problem though.

Actually a lot of people have used clipless left platform-right combos over the years as well, especially before the shimano 636-type pedals were available. I think RMB pro Ritchey Schley used to, for one.

The fact is that unusual terrains and riding styles often warrant unusual equipment set-ups. Unless you have accompanied someone on their rides, we shouldn’t be making judgements on what is ‘pointless’.

Why stop there, you could have a rim, drum AND disc brake working all at once with some effort ;-)

A good set of discs is all you need. You will find that disc brakes aren't nearly as fragile as rim brakes.
