Mountain Biking - Finally gained a bit more respect :D

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys, first of all, let me tell you how happy i am on the lovely evening, its Valentines Day, meeting the girlfriend tonight, and just nailed my first 5 and a half foot drop! It felt amazing! What made me feel even better was that the 3 guys that i ride with, 2 of them are better at jumping than me which is what counts with them. But im catching them up on technical fast sections, and i have now done the biggest drop out of the lot of us, previously held by, guess who, ME! when i did my 4 footer. After i did it for the first time, the adrenaline rush was amazing never felt anything like it in my life. Then the next best guy had a go, and couldnt muster theballs to have a go, i was so happy that i was the only person to do it, and it gave me a huge boost because i know that i am improving, and from doing xc for 2 years and dropping off nothing bigger than a curb, i think to do just under a 6 foot drop since i started freeriding just after Christmas is a very good acheivement!
Thought I'd let everybody know :D:D

Cool, glad to hear you're having a good time :)
Were you on the DMR or the hardrock?

I was on the DMR, dont trust the hardrock to do anything over 2 and a half foot, just feels sketchy, i really like my DMR now, it designed as a jump bike, but i think it fits into many roles, not sure if thats because im just versatile with bikes or not, but the bike handles all sorts of trails well, fast, technical, steep, flat, up hills on a single speed, jumps, drops WHATEVER!! ive fallen in love with this bike :D:D:D

I want but 2 things from stopping me. My rims and maybe my fork might give. Even my handlebars or stem, or pedals. How much did you spend on your bike again?
Anywho, nice achievment. Rock on!

Anything could give on any bike. Find a drop to a nice down slope, start small and work your way up.I'm old, I don't do many to flat anymore.

I definitely doubt anything except your rims going out of true might happen unless you land like a brick.

This was 5 and a half foot to flat, and i spent £650 on the bike second hand, not sure what that translates to, but its alot of money for a 16 year old when you have to maintain two bikes :D
And first off all i shook so much at the bottom i fell off my bike onto the floor after rolling away, then started hysterically giggling, then, danced around for 10 mins while my mates thought i had gone skitz :D

Thats great. It is such a rush when you do something big for the first time, especially if you only started FRing since Christmas :O .

Excuses  Ive done 6 foot drops to concrete on my hardrock with stock cranks, handlebars, stem, pedals, rims, hubs, seat. You should be fine.

yeah, but what about the fork? I wouldn't trust me MZ Comp to a 6' drop for sure. 2 or 3 feet I could see.. but that's not exactly a heavy duty fork. :p

I wouldn't trust his rims myself. I would crush them on a smooth tranny below 5ft....
oh wait, I did.
Hooligan, I am with you (thats odd), I need to fully trust my bike before I can do something, if I don't think my bike can take it I don't take a chance. Most of the injuries I have witnessed (all of them except one actually) were caused by something breaking on the bike causing a nasty crash. I like my equipment to be operating at 100% (one guy did a bar spin off a 7 ft drop, landed perfectly and the fork broke at the crown sending one of the lower upwards into the guys shoulder...he then landed on the shoulder dislocating it...needless to say he loves the new signifigantly beefier/heavy dj forks)

If you rode his rims, I wouldn't trust it but seeing that he weighs a lot less then you, I would not worry as much.
Hooligan, Ive seen people weight a lot more then you ride those rims without troubles. They are hacks but they don't let their equipment slow their progress.
