I just asked my friend, say if I wanted to put on a hyrdaulic disk brake onto (soon to be my) Specialized Hardrock Sport, how much would it cost, and he said that first of all I'd have to change the wheels because they doesn't have disk mounts (that's what they're called right?) and he said they're 50 euros each. That was a shock, I thought that disk mounts (if that's the correct term) can just be added on to the wheels... hmm.
So is it true that if I wanna go with disc brakes then I'll need to change the wheels?

Unfortunatley yeah you will unless you have disc hubs with the mounts. They look like a star shaped thing with 6 holes in it on the left hand side. If you want to keep your rims maybe you could only change the hubs, might be cheaper. Also check if you have mounts on the frame and fork.

Thats why I got the Hardrock Pro It comes with crappy discs so its easy to upgrade. Its a PITA to upgrade to discs if it isnt disc ready so just buy something with discs from the start.

Problem solved under $100 http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/12001-365_SHIDD2-3-Parts-75-Wheelsets/Shimano-Deore-Disc-Wheelset-w_-Sun-Rhyno-Lite-Rims.htm
I realize you're in Spain but this was to give you an idea of what to look for. The wheelset I linked to is cheap and durable and plenty good enough for a first disc brake set up. For $20 more you could have the set that I have http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/12012-365_SHIXS3-3-Parts-75-Wheelsets/Shimano-XT-Disc-Wheelset-w_-Sun-Rhyno-Lite-Rims.htm
which is a nice wheelset while remaining inexpensive.

Even though I have Hayes HFX-9's (hydraulic), I'd consider the Avid mechanical's for a cost savings to help fund the new wheelset. They have wonderful reviews, and I'm planning to buy them in a few months when my Hayes are worn-out....

I dunno... I have a HR Pro and mine came with BB7's. Those are hardly crappy discs. Amusingly my bike was supposed to be spec'd with BB5's but I somehow got BB7's on mine. :)

I highly recommend the link Raiyn gave you with the XT hubs laced to rhyno lites. I have heard nothing but troubles from deore hubs. XT is the best bang for the buck

Now look at the XT reviews, plus i ran for 1000 on the XT rear hub, i loved it. And look at its review:

not to mention, XT is really not all that more expensive. But i know the front hub that i always recommend and i hardly see anybody use is this:

20 bucks, DT swiss. I used it for about 1k miles and its very nice. A steal

I have the pre deore line hubs...they're not even XT level I don't think and I have not had any trouble out of mine.

I put the Deore down as a low ball special that he could beat on. That's also the reason I put the XT link in there to show that a dramatic improvement could be had for cheap

did any one see the title of this thread? (Your asking about wheels/hubs, not tires)

Not a good policy. I actually read the threads before BBQing someone. Much cleaner that way.

Wait, so there's an option to be able to get the hubs WITHOUT changing the rims? Well, for now that sounds like the way to go. :p
As for getting the PRO instead of the SPORT, I'm sorry but I just can't dish up those extra 175 euros. :(

It won't be cheaper than just getting the wheels premade. You'll have to pay to have your wheels disassembled, buy the new hub, but new spokes as the current ones won't fit, and pay to have the wheel rebuilt. V-brakes will work fine until you can afford to upgrade. Just be sure to have some decent brake pads (I personally like Jagwire Switchback Trizones).

How long have you had the Hayes? What is going bad on them?
