Cro-mo would be fine. Should have low-rider braze-ons and double eyelets, fender and canti mounts, of course. I'd rather pay $200 than $400.

Not a bad idea; I'd momentarily forgotten they'd gone over to threadless. But I thought it was 1-1/8", not 1". Does anyone know for sure?
And I'd have to paint it. That dark green would definitely not make it on my ti Airborne!

I just happpen to have a brand-new Trek 520 sitting about 8 feet away from me as I type this. Tell me how/where to measure and I'll tell you if its 1 or 1 1/8.

Measure the outside diameter of the steerer tube. If the top cap is flush with the sides of the tube you can probably just measure that.

Winwood makes a 1" Carbon Lt, Touring fork: $225/250. range
Surly makes one CrMo: about $100.
Kinesis, aluminum: about $120.
There may be other brands, but I'm not familiar with them.
There's a larger selection in 1 1/8th. Most threadless road stems come in 1 1/8th but have shims to accomdate 1" steer tubes.

The Winwood doesn't have low rider braze-ons or a second set of eyelets, but it would probably improve my bike quite significantly. Thanks for pointing it out; I'll keep it in reserve.
The Surly is what I have now. It's a nice fork, and I particularly like the way it looks, but at almost 1000 grams it's just too heavy for a ti frame. And it has the same omissions as the other 'cross forks. That's why I'm looking for something else.
My bike is an Airborne Carpe Diem, and the one I test rode had a Kinesis aluminum fork on it. Horrible. Harsh, buzzy, nasty. Might not be a problem for actual 'cross racing, but as a road fork it's awful.

On my Trek 520, the portion of steerer tube I can see (with the spacers on it) between the stem and the Cane Creek C-1 cap is 1 1/8" wide.
I also checked the Trek website and my Trek catalog and neither specifies the dimension. Weird.
