Commuting - Commute in DC

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wow... I just returned from vacation in Washington DC. I saw a lot of people that commute via bike. We noticed that DC motorists are very polite to pedestrians.
We didn't ride at all. The traffic downtown was just too scary. I don't know how you DC commuters do it. You have my sympathy for doing such a commute.

It's my experience that other cyclists (particularly the wrong-way variety) are the biggest hazard to the urban commuter. I ride in and out of downtown Philadelphia daily, and rarely have any interactions with motor vehicles other than buses. But bikes coming at me are a constant threat.

hope you had a nice time on your visit
yes, alot of people do bike commute in DC and part of the reason is that there is an extensive network of bike trails in the surrounding areas - you probably saw alot of cyclists on or near the monuments - right at the Washington monument you can pick up a trail that will take you to most suburban destinations in DC, MD and VA- only about 1.5 miles of my 10 mile commute is actually on roads for which I am thankful!
