Unfortunately, it was a snapping turtle and not a red snapper (:P)and the species is protected in FLA, so I had to nervously unhook it with needlenose pliers and a great deal of care where I held the turtle with my other hand. Ever seen how long the neck is on a snapping turtle?
And the redeye bass

Reminds me of a scene from Cool Hand Luke. 22 seconds in.
I was snorkeling around a springhead in Central Florida the first time I encountered a snapping turtle at his home. Awesome beast. I'm puttering around in the grass around the mouth of the spring looking at all the fossil shells, looking for bones or teeth and then there's this pissed off looking dinosaur coming at me! I know the dive mask makes small things look a lot bigger, but that it was a Japanese Sci-Fi moment.
These guys can get really big. At a state park in S.E. GA they have a snapper skeleton. The head is at least two hands around and the beak is like the biggest parrot beak on steroids. The shell is maybe a meter long and 60cm wide 40 high.
