View Full Version : Special Needs Tandem

The riding partner of someone I know came down with an illness last year and now has very limited use and strength of her legs. Before the illness, they were both very active and did a lot of outdoor activities together. They once rode their mountain bikes on a self-supported cross-country tour.

Anyway, the partner's health has improved and they are now traveling again on a limited basis. Although she doesn't have the strength for regular, solo cycling, she is getting itchy to get on a bike again. I had remembered seeing some special needs tandems on the web and told her I would take a look for her. What I'm thinking might suit them is a combination upright/recumbent tandem where the recumbent offers both leg and hand cranks.

I remember seeing a builder's website once that offered a wide variety of innovative tandems, but I can't seem to find it. I've searched the web and I know Bilenky creates special needs tandems, but I think the five or six grand for one of these bikes is out of their reach.

If anyone has any advice or knows of any other builders that do this kind of work, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.
