Mountain Biking - Dirt Jumping/Urban Riding...Mountain Biking or Not?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Exactly. While our opinions diiffer, in this case, both are equally valid and therefore there's no reason for anyone to be sensitive about the subject. Ultimately I suppose this issue comes down to one of maturity.
I agree but you started the post and you knew and said it would start wars. Now that it has don't act surprised.
wow, this is really insightful, but i would really like to see you tell john cowan/jeff lenosky/aaron chase....esc. that what they are doing isnt mtb riding, while they jump your house/your mom/ and the biggest jump of all.... your huge macho, purist, EGO!

One thing....Road biking is strictly on the road. So what is mountain biking? Sure, people named it mountain biking, but people could also call it Obstacle biking or Off Road Biking. Or some people would call it strictly biking on mountains. If that is the case, then I've not mountain biked at all. I believe that mountain biking is actually about riding through anything you encounter, but usually not going on the road and road biking. So if youre on a mountain, you can dodge logs, bunny hop rocks, jump off the dirt jumps made there. In the city, you can jump on fountains, ride the rails and grind your way down the stair rails.
It's all about perspective. The first question should be "What does mountain biking mean?" Then build on that. As I said, I believe mountain biking is getting around or over anything you encounter, but usually not road biking and not doing anything else.
Otherwise, you could make the following categories for biking.
Ramp Park Bikes
Mountain Bikes
Trail Bikes (don't have to be on a mountain)
Road Cycling.
Road Obstacle Biking
Biking and never putting your foot down biking
and so on.

I can't believe this thread is still going. CranxOC has your head stopped swelling yet?

After reading a couple more posts, I would stil say that dirt jumping is part of mountain biking. Not becasue its in new world disorder, not because its in magazines. Because Mountain biking in the frist place is about getting down or up the mountain and it would be really boring (but beautiful, in many cases) without any twists, such as drops or obstacles. So, you want to tackle a dirt jump. Its not a groomed path, its a jump. You still over come an "obstacle". It's still mountain biking, just on a different level.

Seriously (except I'm stuck in the house because it's pouring rain outside and the trails here in SoCal are...well...being washed away.)

Yup. I'm here in the land where we don't have an offseason (except when we get a monsoon season every 10 years or so), the trails are unreal, the surf is great (and so is the skiing), the women are spectacular and where 9 out of 10 people in the U.S. wish they could live. SoCal...there's simply no place on Earth that can beat it.

I have meet a few riders from the land of no "offseason", they were usually weak riders. I mean come on an offseason? I ride in any weather. Rain, snow, wind, mud, you name it. It don't have to be nice for me to ride. I love riding more than I hate bad weather. That is what made them weak, their love only extended to about 45 degrees.

I love reading posts about how people are cold at 33f for example. And they wont ride because of it. Thats 0 degrees. I am wearing shorts at 5degrees (slightly less than 45) If I had that temp with only rain I would ride constantly. Only thing that takes me out is lots of snow on the trails (I can't ride road) and *actual* cold temps. (I wuss out at about -10c (14f), it just isn't worth it at that point, I hate layering, so I hop on the trainer)

Porter was actually pretty good at dh and ds racing back in the day before he moved and got all good.
