i did it back in '03. i don't even live in CA anymore, and i have no idea if the course is the same. when i raced it, it was 27 miles long (i was in the citizens category). this was my first ever race...in fact, i bought my bike 2 months prior. so, with only 2 months on the bike, i decided to give it a go. the course was great, with a couple of climbs at the midpoint. it was steep enough that the field was split up nicely and the ultimate winner was decided right here. i managed to hang on to the first group, but pulled a classic newbie move with about 10 miles to go. as i grabbed a swig of water, i went to put the bottle back in the cage. yep, totally missed the cage and jettisoned my only water onto the road. so, here i am, with 10 miles to go, and no fluids. needless to say, i was in the hurt locker. anyway, there was a horrible crash with about 2 miles left. thankfully, it was behind me. i finished 7th. not too bad, but man, have i learned a lot since then.
