I am looking into colleges (mostly private universities and some ivy league) and I was wondering which ones hosted the top cycling teams. Any suggestions?

among private schools on the west coast, Stanford has a pretty good team. and being
a private school, they are better supported than the Univ. of Cali. programs.

In my absolutely unbiased opinion, he he, UC Berkeley. Much better then that other university located few miles from it. It's a public University thought.

this is not entirely related, but one of the minor-ish considerations i have about where i'll land next year [assuming i'm accepted, and i have been at three so far] is the cycling scene and ride quality. my observations so far about the latter:

nyu: how do you exactly get out of town to start a ride?
indiana: great countryside, great roads.
hopkins: out of town, great roads, but getting out of town is the trick.
brandeis: great roads, great countryside, great 'cross scene.
cornell: cycling heaven
bu: see hopkins
rutgers: see cornell
brown: haven't a clue. isn't rhode island flat? good 'cross.

for whatever it's worth: i'm in 1st year phd program now, and maybe your experience will be different than mine(I hope for your sake), but i have just about no time to ride. i can sometimes find an hour or so for a workout in the day, but not the 2+ hours needed for a nice long bike ride. again, hopefully your experience differs from mine.

and don't come to ann arbor if 'good cycling' is high on your list

also, i remember penn had a cycling team. no idea how good they were, but one of the guys i rode w/ was on the team and he was strong. and i think the biking in/around philadelphia is great. plus you've got the velodrome about an hour away if yer into that.

Velocipedio,

I graduated Rutgers, New Brunswick is "interesting" to say the least.
Very nice roads to the west, towards the mountains.
If you are there be sure to get over to Princeton (hated rivals)
and check out Kopp's Bicycle shop, see if you can talk your way
to being shown the upstairs, its virtually a Bicycle racing museum.
Uh, guess where I'm gonna vote for?

hair... if it's anything like my ma experience, it'll be tough but manageable. i doubt i'll have enough time for racing 'cross for a few years, but getting out to ride is something that i always make time to do. of course, it doesn't hurt that i don't usually sleep morte than 6-7 hours. btw, what are you studying? i'm doing history.

marty... you went to rutgers... tell me about the town. i walked around a bit when i visited jackson lears last fall. it seems like a pleasant enough place; typical college town.

Hey, I go to the University of Wisconsin Madison, and we have a pretty good team. Last year we hosted one of the best road nationals ever and that really helped to sure up support for our team. Also, last year we won two of the three mens national championships on the road and the mens overall omnium. The riding in Wisconsin is some of the best I've seen, the only problem is the winter. I didn't go to Madison for the riding, but it sure has worked out well.

i was going to apply to wisconsin, but couldn't get my act together for the deadline. [having said that, but hopkins and indiana had dec. 1 deadlines...] and i'm from montreal. i can handle a cheesehead winter. :)

NYU doesn't have a team or a club. However, there are a bunch of really great teams in the city that you can join.

UVA has a team (there was someone from there getting a VO2max test just ahead of me last weekend). He said the cycling around Charlottesville was great. No idea about the quality of the team, but it's a good school and a pretty, relatively low-traffic part of the state.

Suggest you check the websites of the colleges you are considering and see if they have an intercollegiate team or club.

This comment about PSU confuses me. I wasn't into road biking when I was in school but there for sure is a great cycling club here at PSU but one thing there ISN'T is a Velodrome. That said there are quite a few people here that do ride track.

Oh we did win the 2004 collegiate track nationals. :D BUT WE DON'T HAVE A TRACK!

Ahem. Cal (http://www.calcycling.org/racerep/2004/2004-05-27_Lance_Nationals.php) is the 3-time defending National Road Racing champion.

(disclaimer: I am an alum, although I didn't ride in college, and I support the team by the occasional donation and by buying and proudly wearing the team kit.)

:roflmao:  That was supposed to be a joke right? To be honest the ratios in this area are pretty darned lopsided. PSU has clearly brought people of different nationalities to the area...but apparently none of them are in the cycling club. :D Got to remember we are in the middle of the woods...litterally...40 min drive to any where outside this town and then you are still no where.

Have you heard of the Lehigh Velodrome? Bobby Lea?? I know its not owned by the school but trust me thats what Penn State bikers are associated with.
You guys have a great history, I just did a piece on James Young, but you've never won Road Nats or produced any truely great roadies.

I know the Lehigh Velodrome but it is no where near here, almost a 3 hour drive (180 miles). My guess is that most of the track racers attend or attended PSU Lehigh before coming to the main campus thus giving them 2 years to be right there.

Lees Macredy (thats spelled wrong)

Lees-McRae, fer cryin out loud, and if you're considering NW NC don't forget Appalachian State (my Alma Mater). Hardly Ivy League, but the cycling is world class. Or at least about as good as it gets in the US.

Velocipedio, glad to hear you've departed the hell of your own making, even if it's as the ghost of bikeforums past. It may not be endorphin enduced la-la land, but it's gotta be an improvement! Good luck in your college search and your PhD endeavors.

hey 'buzz... you have a long memory!

the search is done and the applications are in. i now just have to wait for them to accept me and throw large sums of money my way. hopkins invited me down on the march 5-6 weekend, and will pay my way and put me up, so i think they really, really want me. hope so.

Look to Colorado. CU, Fort Lewis, CSU. Probably some of the best riding in the country.

CSU was 2003 Collegiate Team of the year.

Yeah, Little Rhody is flat...Biggest hill I recall maybe 50 feet...In 30 minutes you can be in Connecticut/Mass where you can peddle an hour be in the same state and maybe climb 200 feet in elevation...With traffic might take you an hour to get out of RI..But riding down near Westerly, some great beach roads. Not sure about bike lanes.

Sure, unless you are from the East Coast area, which makes it okay to believe that Pennsylvania and Ohio are "Midwest".

i'm from canada. sometimes it seems anything south of the border between toronto and vancouver is the midwest.

cyclezealot
02-20-05, 01:55 AM
Velo..Many believe there is still another border when you get southwest of St. Louis...the midwest has lakes and corn...Southwest of that it is wheat, soybeans, tobacco, and cotton.

You should start the team if you want to see one. Thats what i did. Susquehanna University doesnt have a cycling team or anything, though Bucknell is 20 mins down the road. I've only been cycling for two years, but my goal is to start racing. Since there isnt a Cycling Team/Club here, i decided to create one. Sure, it has taken a while to get everything sorted, but i presented the Club Idea to the SGA last monday and tomorrow (monday) i have to go to their meeting again to see if they will accept us as a club. We're only a small school (1885 students) so there are only 4 or 5 other Roadies here (that i know about) but two of them are graduating this year. For those of us that are left, we want to start to get into racing shape and enter some of the ECCC races next year. Its all about taking action to get such a thing started. All i had to do was hold a meeting, draft a constitution, elect two officers (naturally, i am the President), meet with an SGA member to go over the Constitution and giver her the tentative member list, then present the club to SGA and answer questions. Now its in their hands, but since we arent requesting much funding for our first year, we should be recognised as a Club.

I know Cornell team well, and grew up in the area. Great team, some top riders, excellent leadership. Endless rural hilly roads around Ithaca, but you'll learn to like rain, wind, and clammy weather.
