I'm building up a Surly Cross-Check, and am wondering if I should go with the Open Pro rims or the Mavix CXP-33's. I'll be using this bike for a lot of off-road riding on fireroads and singletrack, but also commuting to work with it on those trail days (2-3 times a week). I've heard the Open Pros are durable enough for cyclocross and trail riding, but would I have to be carefull to not bash on them too hard? I'd prefer the weight savings of the Open Pros if they are durable enough.

I dont think you could go wrong with either rim. The 33's are a bit more aero. I have Open Pros on two bikes and one is a cross bike that I beat up on and the wheels have been nothing but trouble free!

i always thought crossers ran aero rims for their increased stiffness but recently learned it's also for their improved mud shedding. eventually i want to ditch the alex wheelset that came stock on my bianchi axis for something with higher spoke count and the cxp 33 looks pretty good. isn't it only like 20 grams difference per rim over the OP's?

well the site says 425g per OP and 470g per Cxp33.

What kind and width tires are you planning on running for off-road? Are you going to commute on the same tires?
I will post specific recommendations based on those factors.

I've got some Kenda Cross tires (I think 35's) that seem pretty durable so on cross training days I'll be commuting on them and then heading up onto the trails after work.

also look at velocity rims. I think they are nicer rims and don't cost any more about 55.00 each no matter what one you get. the deep v's are very strong.

for what it's worth, i've been bashing up the same set of 32h open pros for three racing seasons, and i've had no problems at all. in fact, the ops are probably the most common rims at the races in my area by a large margin.

I own some open pros and have never tried to mount a 35c on them as their inside width seems too small. Really good clincher rims for wide tires are Mavic T221 and its T-series progeny, Sun CR-18, Salsa Delgado. Anyone have any others? Maybe the Velocity Dyad, I don't have its inner width handy.

35s fit fine on open pros. i don't know about 38s, though. never tried.
