Looking for a good route from the North Shore/Port Wash area to the Queensboro Bridge.

I sometimes go from my house in Oceanside this way:
Nassau Blvd. to Marcus Ave. Marcus Ave. becomes Union Turnpike. Then pick up Queens Blvd and go over the 59th Street Bridge. It is definitely a roundabout way to go (about 38 miles from my house) but I like it.

I live in Great Neck. Would recommend that you stay off Queens Blvd regardless of time of day. Besides from North Shore, this is out of the way. I am not often in Manhattan, unless for 5 Boro Bike tour scouting. I usually go into Manhattan via Northern Bouldvard --all the way to Queensboro Plaza --but this is usually very early in the monring. There is an official bike route on 34th Avenue that will take you also into Sunnyside then across the rail yards there to Queensboro Plaza and the bridge. This route begins in Corona onthe other side of Flushing Meadow Park. As less efficiant alternate would be to take the L.I.E. service road into Douglaston, then take the 73rd Avenue bike lane into Forest Hills, then north on Junction Blvd or 108th Street to the aforementioned 34th Avenue bike lane. Check the Transportation Alternatives site (www.transalt.org) for a link to the official NYC bike maps.

Good Post.

I hate Queens Blvd and the traffic is very aggressive. That Blvd takes lots of lives each year and I can just imagine having to ride that jungle each day. I would never do it. To be honest, I did it once or twice during the summer and that's about all I could take. The drivers in Long Island have no respect for cyclists and there are times when you HAVE to ride in the door zone or get run over. Incredible.
