General Cycling Discussion - Okay, I am willing to make an exception about wearing team kits!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We have discussed and debated the subject of wearing non earned team kits ad nauseum. I have always been on the side of wear what you want - no one who rides will mistake you for a pro, and civilians could care less. Today, however, I have found an exception to my opinion:

I was having a puke fest of interval training on a roadway. I was in the middle of an interval, when coming the wrong way up the road is a guy riding a girl's touring bike (girl's down top tube, etc.), at about 5 mph, no helmet, but a full Postal Service team kit. That takes it a bit too far, so I must make an exception to my argument!

I'm sorry, I still don't understand. How would it have improved your life if he had been wearing something different?

Oh, okay, let's really get deeply philosophical about this. Give me a break pal!

Maybe he was cruising about on a leisure ride? Could be his bike was broken so he borrowed his gf's bike?

Who cares?

Good point - who cares. Please all, disregard this thread - I am going to unsubscribe to my own thread. It seems to bring weird denizens out of the woodwork.

I'm a girl, so is it equally bad for me to ride a guy's bike? No jersey and a helmet though.

There is nothing wrong with anyone riding whatever bike they enjoy riding or want to ride. As for girls not wearing jerseys, I love that idea! And of course, a helmet for everyone. We want everyone to be safe. Especially those topless girls.

I was tempted to buy a Team Phonak jersey yesterday because I think it would be risque/controversial. At least a conversation piece.

Please, by all means, feel free to ride without a jersey!

How do you know it wasn't a work of performance art?....... Ummm yeah, it was one of those anti-lance people making a statement about how he thought all the posties were sissies (maybe? Hey it could happen!)?

I ain't gonna wear no stinkin' lycra, so get your mind out of the gutter! I did an 8 mile round trip to pick up Arby's for an IEEE meeting. There is no way I would show up for that in anything other than jeans and a T shirt. This is only really understandable to those that know what IEEE is. I already get enough crap for putting 1.25 slicks on my commuter MTB.

Maybe a friend and his wife died in a tragic accident, and this is a way for the guy to cope, only the wife's bike fit him? Who knows.

I find it interesting that it is OK for women to ride men's bikes but not the other way around. Some men would fit the frames better, but the stigma keeps them away from a better fit.

A guarantee you that a girl in lycra would be the most popular person at an IEEE meeting.

I would guess that any girl is the most popular person at an IEEE meeting.

Actually, the IEEE club here has a decent female population. Might have something to do with being the only BME related club in town. But if I wanted that kind of attention from fellow geeks I can just wear my leather trenchcoat.

UNC is the only school where I haven't had a random guy ask me out on a date. I think it has to do with the med school being next to the nursing school. Better not post my picture and ruin this image of myself that I have just created :).

I wonder, now that Lance has moved on to the Discovery package if the Postal stuff will still be so hated? Thats a funny story though. Now, I wonder where I can find one of those Discovery jerseys?

My brother and I had a conversation very similar to this yesterday. I said that there are some guys that could fit on a compact (read "girlie") frame and some gals can fit on a standard (read "man-type"). So what? It the bike fits, ride like the wind. Happy trails, all.

Nope! I don't think that you deserve a break. You want to mock this fellow because his choice of bike and clothing don't meet your standards but you can't handle it when somebody pokes a little fun at you.

Here's how I see it - it's his right to go out looking the way he does, and it's your right to laugh at him.

So, would he have looked better or worse without the jersey?

Why is it assumed that someone who criticizes another person online has no life?

At least he's not a Poseur (I hope).

Actually, retro grouch admits to being a bit of a poseur. I have some decent bikes, use mountain bike pedals and sometimes even wear a Postal jersey. Worst of all, I'm old and fat and can't ride nearly as fast as the other guys.

The original question comes up again: How would it enhance your life if I used road pedals and was able to ride faster?

Which philosopher first said, "Physician, heal thyself"?

It was quoted by Jesus as a common proverb of his day. Luke 4.23

Or was that a rhetorical question?
