Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

One of the great things about working for a university is that no matter where you go, there are always bikes around. This morning, I saw a vintage Raleigh three speed parked at a bike rack. It had some wear on it to be sure, and the old Brooks saddle had weathered, wrinkly look you might see on the face of a chain-smoking 75-year-old cowpoke. But those things only added to the bikes beauty and character in my eyes.

Anyway, I got to thinking, where does one find such a bike these days? I'm not necessarily looking for a show bike but for a bike that will be ridden. Hence, it can have a spot or two of rust and the parts don't all have to perfectly match the original specs.

By the way, I'm in no way a collector. I've been into vintage bikes only by default. That is, I bought my first real road bike in 1976, and it's still running and in the family. As are all the other bikes that have come my way. Thanks for any help!

Check out eBay, or Craigslist.org for Richmond or D.C.

Blackberry-- get me your frame size, I'll keep an eye out for a vintage one if you want. I visit C'ville on occasion, could just bring it up. Doubt I'd have to pay more than 5-10$ down here. You might try the local thrifts, but with UVA, I'd imagine they are relatively picked over. You might also talk to the guy at Basic Cycles, he might have a line.

Can't say that they'd be certain to have anything, but you might want to give a call to Shenandoah in Harrisonburg. JMU being down the street might help or might hurt - hard to say.
