I received a replacement from CatEye for my EL500 (the one I bought in October that had a disquieting tendency to randomly switch off). The replacement unit seems to have a different LED. The color of the light is greenish instead of blue-white, and it doesn't appear to be quite as bright.

(If you shine them both on a wall the difference in color is quite striking. And I've swapped batteries around between them enough to assure myself that that's not the problem.)

I sent the first replacement unit they sent me back because of this, but the second replacement has the same greenish LED.

The tech-support folks at CatEye assure me that nothing has changed-they are using the same kind of LED in current production runs as they were in October.

Has anyone else seen this change?

I don't think Cateye lights are the simplest possible circuit design. I think they have some kind of resistor that drops the voltage so that the LED doesn't get burned out by excessive battery voltage. If the resistors aren't the same and thus the voltage hitting the LED is different, it would make sense for the light coming from the LED to be a different color.
