Mountain Biking - Stupid question but I have to know

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is the concept behind the single speed? Yeah, I understand its only one speed but why? It seems like if you dont want to change gears then just leave it on one and dont change. I am intrigued

Less parts to break, simplicity in running a bike.
Well, if you leave your bike in one gear, you still have that stupid derailleur that will throw your chain off if you hit a log, or will slip gears if you bend a hanger, plus you loose efficiency through all the moving parts on the drivetrain. Its also dead silent.
