I just had my threadless stem and handlebars stolen off my bike while I was at work in Manhattan today. Has anyone out there tried replacing thier allen bolts with security screws (that require a special wrench) to deter parts theft ?

you mean the torx screw with a security pin?

Never done it, but it definately is feasible. Most of these replacement screws are available through a decent hardward store or a GRAINGER catalog.

I fill the heads the screws/bolts on my bike with epoxy. It takes a good ten minutes to clean a bolt out. I think the theives will just move on to the next bike...

What a good idea, I had never thought of that. I'll have to try that once I have my beater town bike built up.

I wonder if just silicon RTV would work... still takes time to dig out... epoxy seems like a real pain.

I used to put a ball bearing in each allen head, with silicone. You could dig it out with some effort, but I figured most thieves would just move on to the next bike.

For those of you who put silicone in your bolt heads, what is it? Is it some kind of soft glue? I'm just wondering how hard it would be to get it in/out of the allen-head skewers on my bike.

Silicone is a soft caulk which is used to caulk around bathtubs/showerstalls, and on the exterior of houses to seal off gaps. You should check it out, when it hardens it is still soft.
You can buy a tube of it at home deopt/lowes or at any hardware store for around $2.50.
