BMX - how do i bunny hop?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i'm new to bmx and can bunny hop but its really sad, i only get up about 3 inches in the air! how can i bunny hop higher so i dont look like an idiot infront of other people!?
Well, you need to say which way you bunnyhop: do you pick up both tires at the same time, or do you pick up your front tire first, then your back?
If you bunnyhop by picking up both tires at the same time, you might as well stop. This way is almost useless, and you will probably not go anywhere with it. Do yourself a big favor and learn the other way.
Now, if you pick up your front tire and then your back, you just need to practice. To get higher in the air you need to lean back more, then lean forward more once the back tire leaves the ground. But to really figure this out you just need to do it more. Good way to practice is to find small cardboard boxes to bunnyhop over. After a while it all starts falling into place.
Good luck

Levi, isnt that a J-Hop? I dont BMX, to tall, but i do mtn bike. When i think of bunny hopping, i think of both tires up at the same time... What you described, was a J-Hop, where you pull your front tire in the air, then pull up the rear. Maybe its different in BMX.
Roadrash, IIRC, j-hop is short for jackrabbit hop, or something close. This name came about from kids just getting into Mtn biking/bmx and don't know their left foot from a piece of toast :D Hehe, no, that isn't called a J-hop, it is called a bunnyhop in the world of BMX :)
Come to think of it, the only reason I could think of that you would want to pull up both tires at the same time would be if you were doing trials. Otherwise, it is pointless in BMX.

I use bunny hops (both wheels up at same time) to jump small logs under 12" at speed... you dont have time to do a "BMX bunny hop" when going 30mph... I use a J-Hop (BMX bunny hop) to get my bike into the back of my truck :)
ok guys, who's pulled off the biggest hop...I managed 21" on my MTB, but couldn't hop over a twig on my old BMX...
The gauntlet is down my friens....
p.s. Please don't break any bones... :)
