Brakemeister and anyone contemplating purchasing a chance to win this bike should realize that private charity raffles in Illinois must comply with the Illinois Raffles Act (230 ILCS 15/0.01). Under this law, raffles need to be approved by local authorities. Generally, only charitable groups, veterans organizations, schools, etc. are permitted to hold raffles, and not individuals, even if the intent is charitable. Violation of the Act is a Class C misdemeanor.
Illinois also prohibits Internet gambling. I'm not sure if that particular prohibition would apply here, but it might.
Heres some info.: http://www.gambling-law-us.com/Charitable-Gaming/Illinois/Raffle-Act.htm
I am not suggesting that this raffle does not comply with the Raffles Act. But there's nothing on the Thorusa web site that indicates that it does, in fact, comply. If it does comply, Thorusa should update its website and this thread to give such assurances.
I hate to rain on anyone's parade, and this seems like a very good cause, but these laws exist for a reason: a history of abuse.
There are plenty of worthy charities, but I'd rather not see them all raffling bikes on these forums. Too much potential for abuse and fraud.
Shouldn't this be in 'shameless promotions'?
