As far as XC Race bikes that are light, Cannondale should definately be considered. Yeti's are nice but you'll be hard pressed to keep the cost under $1,800.
Kona's tend to be heavier, albeit stronger.
I would definately put SPECIALIZED on your list.

If you go hardtail it will be much easier to go lighter.

I own a Kona and love it. They make great bikes. This is the lightweight Kona FS bike available under $1,800.00. Kona Kikapu Deluxe (http://konaworld.com/shopping_cart/FrontEnd/Products/product_detail.aspx?productid=95&parentid=182) It's a great bike but I agree with a2psyklnut, Kona's aren't the lightest bikes out there.

Look into a Rocky Mountain Element or Specialized Epic. Both are excellent machines designed for cross country.

yeah im looking for a lite weight bike with a decent full suspension. i have to say i liked the yeti 575 the best but it was out of my price range, i havent checked out the specialized epic or the kona deluxe kikapu-a very reputable shop in atlanta highly recommended the delux kikapu,he said it was light. i know a hard tail would be alot lighter than a full suspension but i've never owned a full suspension and would like to try one- any other suggestions? thanx
