Marin County is the home of mountain biking. Whistler looks more fun, though.

To bad most trails are closed :)...

Whistler/North Shore are the current Mecca of freeriding. What do you want to know, I am a walking talking tourist information guide on the subject.

I wouldn't mind going to diablo, my only issues would be the shortness of the trails. The mountains over there aren't as long (this is conjecture based on cnversations of people going to both), thats what the west coast has pretty much exclusively. Diablo has some smoking trails though :)

How good it is realy depends on YOU. If you like sweet singletrack, manmade stunts, big hucks, then sure it is a great place. If you are in to smooth rolling hils with not much technical difficulty then you wont like it. It all depends on YOUR personal likes and dislikes.

Personally I feel every mtb'er should check out all the great mtb spots, ie. Whistler, Moab, Bootleg, Mammmoth, etc. etc., etc. Check 'em out for your self and decide.

maelstrom , where are most of the dh trails? on whistler, blackcomb or both? are there all the way up? i think i remember seeing the entrance to some trail on blackcomb up near the second lift on your way to the top.are there any trails up any further? what do you think will be the safest time weather wise to visit? rain all day would stink and so would rutted out trails or even a dust storm while following your friends. i'm guessing toward the end of july. if you have a recommendation for fairly priced lodging i'd appreciate it as well.

diablo has really stepped up its game by adding a lot of features in the past 2 seasons.they even have what some people consider a mini A-line (upper and lower dominion trails). if you guys do make the trip out i wouldn't miss plattekil either. they've had to step up their game as well since diablo has been open for the past 2 consecutive seasons and it a lot closer to NYC. they've added liftacces the N.face of the mtn . there are a lot
of trails to ride. it also has more vertical that diablo. and just plain rugged terAin.

All whistler, blackcomb has no official DH runs. On whistler they are to the 'top' but not peak (slight difference, but really peak is unridable on a bike) Top to bottom for a decent rider takes 30minutes or so. July august is easily the safest time. Really, BC is a weather wonderland. It can be dead dry one day and soaking the next. Its hard to predict. You have to come here enjoying riding in any conditions. June July to avoid dust (although this year will be bad) and july august to avoid rain.

What do you consider fair. Most places go for 70 american, some cheaper, some more.

Diablo looks awesome, I have heard lots about it. I don't travel much and really with the north shore south, sun peaks, nelson, Golden and kelowna I have a lifetime of local riding, all of it completely different from each other (head north and it looks like idaho) Someday I might go east again but it won't be for a couple of years :)

as for lodging when i've been up there and stayed slopeside on blackcomb the fisrt time. i forget the name of the hotel ,i believe the name of the place has changed .the other time i think it was holiday inn in the village. i forget how much but it wasnt cheap. $70 american is reasonable but if you know of something else for less that is decent that would be cool to.some of my friends are on a limited budget and i have a wedding to save for so no 5stars places are needed this time around. something clean and bike friendly.walking distance or a short bike ride from the village would be ok. i've seen some stuff on the net but some local knowledge is always nice

hey if i lived in BC i doubt i'd make any trips out east to ride!

The westin is a bike in bike out hotel right at base.

Did you stay at the Marriott or Aspens on blackcomb?

There is cheaper and might be even cheaper in the future. I am working with the monkies to create an informal monkie club to potentially get discounted rates at hotels in whistler.

i think it was the aspens. this was my first trip in 1999. the place was sweet.we somehow got an upgraded room w/a kitchen and 3 bedrooms and it was only 3 of us.outdoor hot tubs looking at the coverd lift at the base.
please keep me in the loop if you do manage to get some kind of discounted rate. we're not booking for at least a month so it gives me more time to research. thanks

Try this link. I've never personally used a hostel but my sister is really a fan. You can find rooms all over the world.

We have two. I don't like hostels. For a little more a night you get privacy and better security. with a 5000$ bike, its worth it. To really save money camping works too

i found this so far shoestring lodge (http://shoestringlodge.com/). less expensive than a full service hotel but not quite a hostel. good point about the bikes. we'd pay up if we had to but i'd like to keep it reasonable so i won't have my buddies backing out on me when i give them a total cost.i'm also gonna check my travel agent she's helped me find good deals in the past

Camp...same spot almost exactly location wise (10min bike) and same price.

Although the shoestring is a bar/pub/cold beer and wine AND Strip club

hahaha. i've been to that strip club out there. its in the shoestring? i don't remember where but it was a good time. well i think i've just made up my mind :D as for camping i'd hate to have to bring extra gear. i stink at packing and alway bring to much crap anyway. after riding all day i thimk we'd prefer a real bed to sleep in.
