Touring - Adventure Cycling Association

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is anyone on here affiliated with this organization? I have been for a year and plan to use their Pacific Trail maps on my trip. But over the year, I've noticed they are heavy on selling organized tours, which don't really attract me. I do, however enjoy reading through their magazines I get all the time.
Are there similar organizations like this that represent Canada or parts of Central and South America? It would be nice if I could get ahold of similar maps for these areas.
Also, please share stories of how this org has helped you.
Peace

Ive used the adventure cycling maps in the past as well as making my own routes as i go. One advantage of the A C maps is they are loaded with usefull info. Like where you might find a city park to camp in and where you might find a shower, the terraine, places to camp motels grocerys, post offices etc. there are some sttretches of 75 miles and more that have no services at all and its nice to know this ahead of time so you have extra provisions for that days ride.
all the info on the maps you couild get by asking people along the way but it is much eaiser to have the maps.
you must be about ready to hit the road soon happy pedals and good winds to you

I've been an Adventure Cycling member for about 5 years. They have a GREAT magazine, probably the best in print.
I would really like to do some of their organized events, like Cycle Utah or Cycle Vermont.

I just subscribed to Adventure Cycling. I plan on doing the Cycle Utah tour for my first tour (Spring of 2003), or as an intro to bike touring. After that, I would love to take some time off for self supported tours.

I joined Adv-Cycling before I took the organized ride of Cycle Vermont 4 years ago. I really did have a blast on the ride and made some life-long friends as a result. You really hate for the ride to be over if you hook up with the right folks.
The organization is really very good and as you may know is the modern version and an outgrowth of BikeCentenial from the mid 1970's. The magazine is great and the rides are really not as expensive when you compare them with some of the other tours out there. Great food and well mapped and professionally run.
I have some friends that have done a number of the organized tours, including Utah and the Northwest. I hope to do one of the western tours next summer.
Overall I think it is a good group and well run organization. I believe they are a non-profit and seem to do things the right way. I haven't heard any real complaints. The maps you can purchase are very much bike-specific and not just a copy of a road map meant for cars.
I did let my membership lapse, but do plan on rejoining sometime soon.

I joined AC this year and I too think they are great. Good rep, great mag, Cyclist Yellow Pages are really amazing. I have never heard a bad word about their tours, I will try one this year. The organized tour seems to be a logical choice for touring newbies like myself, at least to get started.
Will post agin when I have tried it.

I am also a member. Their magazine is great. Great ideas and advice on bikes and other equiptment. Advice that I trust.
Have used their maps on my own self-supported tours. Twice now, in fact. Trip I would love to do with AC is their Vermont tour. Vermont being one of my favorite places.

Adventure Cycling supports both organized tours and individual riders. They understand touring cyclist's needs. Their maps are excellent. I highly recommend using their maps. Be sure to stop by their office in Montana. You will be warmly welcomed.

Yea, I got that impression after emailing them about my trip. I got a response the very next day and they told me it was too bad my route wasn't through Montana, that I could stop by. Pretty cool.
