I am purchasing a new road bike in the next couple of weeks. I am only 15yrs old and this is my first road bike so im just getting a starter.Because I get parts at a little over cost, as I am a technician, I am not buying an actual brand of bike.

Columbus SL CrMo Frame 56CM

Nice yellow paint job from Menkes

Threadless CrMo Fork

Headset and Stem not sure about yet

Ritchey drop handlebars (road style)

Full 1999 Shimano RX100 Gruppo (supposedly it is just the unpainted 105 series)

Vuelta Rims (im not racing YET so wheel weight isnt the issue)

Ritchey SPD-R pedals (i already have the spd shoes for my MTB so may as well use a similar pedal)

Vredstein Fortezza Tires

all this for $1200 CASH no Tax

Is this a good deal and how will this combination work out for a 15yr old who is an avid cyclist but wants to go fast as well. I hate doing LD on my MTB. Why oush for 35km/h when i can push for 60km/h. I also cant buy this bike tho till someone buys my MTB from me which is posted in the b/s/t if anyone is interested. Plzz give me your comments. Also I gotta find some decals to put on this unless i choose to keep it plain.

The frame sounds nice -- if it fits. SL was a very nice steel.

But the components sound a little... well... low-spec for the price. RX100 was the precursor to the Tiagra group, which is found on C$1200 bikes today. It is eight=speed, ratjher than 9-speed, so upgrading to modern 105 or Ultegra components will be a real hassle.

On the whole the bike sounds nice... for maybe $800 if everything is new or in mint condition. I think $1200 is way off.

i asked a bunch of my fellow tech buddies in the city. They all say it was identical to the 1999 105SC except it didnt have the brownish grey finish.. Thats all. Then I asked them which was better the 99 105SC or the Tiagra and they all said go for the 105SC it still performs better. So..... And yup the frame fits me perfectly.

Velicipedio,
Are you able to find me an equivalent bike for around $800-$900. I personally like the RX100 better than the Tiagra, just the fact that the RX doesnt use plastic. But w/e personal preference. Are you able to build a bike for 800-900 with the rx100 and the Columbus SL frame. New would be preferable and if i could pay cash no tax that would be good too. I live in TO so meeting is not an issue. And i figured you may have some connections at shops. I dont care about the bike manufacturer as long as its got the frame and parts and spd-rs. Ill pay 1000 even but i thot u may have some TO connexions. Pm me or contact me thru one of the contacts in my signature. My name is Brian

Thanx

Brian for $,1200.00 the price of the bike is very expensive, RS100, the grupo is like$200.00, maybe the frame you can get for another $200.00, and the wheels another $200.00, so youre looking at only $600.00, I am also residng in Toronto, the price of $1,200.00I thinks is expensive, try going to Sport Swap at Yonge They have now the used bike for sale, don't plunge with that deal, coz, who ever is selling you that bike will hit it big time, Or you might try going to Uncle Jacobs at Spadina, he sell used bike, do not rush you can get a good bike for $1,200.00, you can Even get a brand NBew one, I have seen a Treks bike and a couple like Giant and Specialized for $1,200.00 and its brand new, just give it a very long thinking

BTW were you sure that 1200 is too much.. The parts arent used.. they are just 3 years old. You gotta also look that its on an SL frame which was once retail $700 i think.

Sounds really expensive for a steel frame/fork. for example (but I am not suggesting you get this bike), the back of the Colorado Cyclist catalog has a full 105 equipped, carbon fork bike for $999, a full Ultegra alum/carbon stay/reynolds ozu comp carbon fork bike for $1500-- that's just from 1 minute of looking.
for $1200.00, I would be looking for an Ultegra bike. Maybe $800US is equal to $1200Canadian? Or bike just more expensive up there?

everything in TO is marked up by a million percent. Here 1200 will get you a new bike with Tiagara and maybe a little 105 if your lucky.

It's like $1000 for a Giant OCR2 and $1500+ for a OCR1

kenneth do you think 1200 is ok price for that bike brand new.. rx100 is basically a metalized 8speed tiagara.. so it performs better than tiagara minus 1 speed and i dont even care bout that 1 speed.

Can't really say whether or not it's a good deal :D because I don't know enough

I'm 18 - I'm gonna get my first road bike this summer as well..so I've been doing a lot of research - my budget is like yours - $1000 - $1500 cdn.

yah im 15. but since i am a techy.. i am able to get parts that are slightly cheaper.. 105 is still to expensive for me tho.. so my next best bet was rx100 which was the unpainted version of 105 in 99
