Classic & Vintage - Opinions on this Triumph I bought today...

I donated some stuff to the local charity flee market place today and had to go back and check out the bike section. Wow, over the winter folks have been really turning them in! Nothing super cool, but lots of 3spds and older 10 spds. Great place for parts.

Anyway, I saw this one bike with a Stormey-Archer hub, and I've been looking for a shifter chain and adjuster for my winter beater. I give the guy $15.00 (cheaper than I can order the parts) and throw it in the back of the pickup. I get home and really take a look, and this is a pretty cool old ride. Ladies bike, but cool anyway. Hub is an AW, and is dated 1967. I know this is a second rate Raleigh via Sheldon Brown, but it's nifty. Styled fenders, lugged frame, original (and still OK) whitewall tires. Italian seat. Good paint.

Anyway, now I hate to use it for parts! I hit the frame with some Goo-Gone and it's cleaning up nicely. Oh man, I don't need another bike! The wife likes it, but only if I paint it. I kind of like the old scheme. Maybe if I get it gleaming she'll change her mind. Anyway, here you go....

Well, green and orange WERE very popular colors "back in the day", but even the creative geniuses who gave us avacado refrigerators and international orange Datsuns didn't have the audacity to mix the two. If your wife likes this one after you resolve that issue (don't try to kid yourself - it IS a big deal), it's definitely a keeper. If not... How much for the shift lever? ;)

Too bad about falling in love with the Triumph! Your heart is pure, your head is empty, and your garage is going to have to make room for one more real nice bike. Looks like a very well spent $15.00. Don't part it out!

I have a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub if you want it cheap. I don't remember what year it is offhand but can check tonight or tomorrow morning when I'm actually at home (work now). Heck, you can have the entire AMF Hercules it's attached to if you want that.

Let me know and I'll dig through the pile for you.

Thanks for the offer on the hub. I think I'm OK. My winter beater needs the shifter mechanism, but I'm not certain I'm even going to use that bike next year.

Anyone ever cruise a girls bike every once in a while? Bikers already get stares as it is, but I was considering sporting this thing to work one day, just to try it out. So, has anyone else been manly enough to do it before?

Not personally, but a childhood friend's dad used to ride one regularly. Always wore his full motorcycle helmet while riding it. Not sure whether that was to protect his head or his identity :D.

But seriously, I doubt anybody will give you trouble. Nice find, by the way.

I have a 62 ccm rambler [girls] I ride to the store when I have a few bags to bring back. It has a big basket up front. No shame.

I think I have a couple of Sturmey Archer 3 spd shifters lying around if you are still looking for one. Let me know if there is a particular one and I'll dig around when I have some time.

I ride a Specialized Hardrock with a step through frame to ride my baby around with.

I've got a Triumph 1-speed that's got a '74 Burnaby bike licence sticker on it and it's my pride and joy. Needs a lot of work, but hopefully I'll get it done this summer. You can't kill those things. It'll probably outlive us all!

I rode my wife's Mixte framed Univega for about 4 weeks while recovering from a hernia repair & I met a few of my elders riding them on the bike path. Some grey hair helps you pull it off. Don

Do you still have the Hercules bike you posted in February?

I personally love the color scheme, dude, don't touch it!
