BMX - Getting enough courage.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I've been building a ramp with my dad and bro, and it has turned out scarier than I thought it was going to be. I knew it was going to be two feet high, but I've never seen a ramp two feet high. I don't have many options for landing ramps, and I don't know what to do. I'm a little scared about going off of it, and I don't know how I should aproach doing it. I've had exerience with jumps, just none of them where that high. So does anyone have a suggestion of how I could get used to the ramp without screwing myself up? I mean, it's two feet high, with a mellow transition (thank God) and I know that if you go off of something that high without enough speed, you'll nose it, or something worse. And I also know that you could get some big freakin' air off of a ramp that size, and I DO NOT want to do that on my first few jumps. So could someone give a suggestion as to where would be a good place to land, and at about how much speed I'd want to go?

hey, all u really gotta do is not think that much, i know that may sound really stupid but if you think ur not gonna wanna do it as much cuz u mite get all scared.u also wanna try n get ur self pretty pumped up if its your first time, so try and get sum of ur bmx friends to hit it b4 u so u can see what u gotta do. for the landing u just gotta make it comfortable for u, so if u wanna jus hav fun make it bout 5 feet. u dont really even need much speed for this gap.n if ur still a lil scared throw a pallet in the gap(no need to make a table top). this makes it look all that much easier.well, hope i helped u out at least a little bit.

find a ledge about the same height of the ramp, and setup the ramp there. jump onto the ledge to get used to the ramp, then you can jump the ramp without the ledge

This sounds like a great idea, but I don't have any ledge that I can put it by. Thanks though.

Thank you very much for the help, I might try some of the things that you said. We just finished it today, and it doesn't actually look that big anymore. I think I'll be fine jumping it, and I do have an idea for the landing ramp. I have an eight inch box, with two eight inch landing wedges, so I'm going to put one landing wedge on the box, and then one butted up against the box so that it is one big landing wedge. How does that sound? In total, it would only be 8 inches below the launch ramp, so I think it should do just fine. Now all I have to do is decide how far I'm going to put it away from the launch ramp, and try it. Unfortunetly it is raining out right now, so it'll have to wait for another day. But anyway, thanks alot!

You can get big air off a curb if you know what you're doing.

I used a picknick table(long way) with a plywood landing ramp(just a pice of plywood with 2 screws in the table edge on the far side) . You can land on top and never be to far from a solid surface . build a landing ramp when you start getting comfy.
My dad was not terribly happy about this solution but it was nothing compared to when my buddies would make moonlight runs up the quarter pipe :)

Just visualize and go do it. Nothing to it, unless you can't visualize your trick or whatever you are gonna do. Get your dad or someone cheering for you.

I think it's cool your dad will help you out builing a ramp. Does he ride too?

No, but he's been really supportive to me, and it's been nice. And since I can't drive yet, he takes me to the bike shop too. Sometimes, he even gets some tools or something for me to use with my bike. He is a really really nice dad, I'm very blessed. I think it's cool that you thought it was cool, thank you!
look at how small this ramp is.
that's pretty high. and the runway was kinda crappy..
if you have never rode off a jump that is 2 foot tall, I would just take a piece of plywood and lay it on the backside of the ramp. then practice riding over it.... just keep your front end up.

Hey is that you in that picture? Is it a wallride or, it kind of looks like a manual wall ride or something.
not me, it's my friend. it's a wallride. it just looks like a manual because he's just pulling off....

Cool photo, good suggestion. I think that I'm going to do that thing with the landing ramps that I have, stack em' up. That sounds like it would work pretty good, and it wouldn't be to far bellow the top of the launch ramp. And if I'm not confortable with that, I can always put it in front of me big dirt landing ramp, and launch off onto that. But really, thanks alot for the suggestions guys, they've given me some ideas.

ya you should put the ramp at the top of a hill and the use the hill as your landing....or you could just work your way up going faster and faster every time until you actually get air.......... -taylor- kinetikbikeshop@yahoo.com
