Any of you guys in Southern Cali go squidding? Supposedly it was the first time since 1997 that the giant squid came through here.

My dad and I went out and these were some giant squid. We caught about 8 squid each and they weighed in(total) over 300lbs. Don't worry we aren't gonna waste it, giving most of it away to family.

Anyway, it was alot of fun, just wondering if anybody here went out.

8 squid in one day? Sounds like there must've been a bunch of them. How exactly do you do about squid fishing? Just a regular hook and bait? Do they swim pretty deep?

The squid were swimming about 50-100 feet deep. It must have been a massive school of them since there was about 8 boats out fishing every day for about a week and a half.

For squid fishing we were using squid jigs. Basically a glow-in-the-dark tube with two rows of hooks. Just drop it down and bounce you're rod up and down and within a minute you were hooked up.

WOW, 300 lbs is a LOT of sushi! That sounds like a great time, how are you going to keep it, freezer, pickle it or just eat it till gone? Way to go.

We're having a moderate El Nino now. The last big one was in 97-98, which probably explains your big haul. Look out for other wayward fishies, I've been hearing stories about tropical species showing up as far as AK. SUSHI!!!

Most of it was given away to various relatives and friends. We(my family) ended up keeping about 30lbs of it.

We froze 26lbs of the squid we kept and the rest of it my mom used for frying, sushi and pan-friend with halapenos and garlic.

It's pretty good :D
