I am looking at getting into wheel truing. I now that this can be a long process to learn but I feel that I have the patience and the interest to learn. I was looking at the Performance Spin Doctor Truing stand because of the price. I checked the reviews at mtbr.com and the reviewers seemed to like it. I would be picking up an aligment tool, spoke wrenches, etc when i purchased it. What are you experiences with this and other truing stands that you would recommend? I don't have a ton of cash to spend so something for the home mechanic would be good. THANKS for the opinions!

Ric Hjertberg --the guy who started Wheel Smith-- is teaching wheel building classes. You might want to check this out

As for the truing stand, I've used the Park TS2 for about 10 years with no problems. I've never seen the Performance one you mentioned so can't comment on it.

Hey moab,
I would like to add that there are some good references on the web regarding wheel building. Also, I have a couple of books that you may want to pick up as references.

The first one is called "The Bicycle Wheel" by Brandt. It is available at Cambria Bicycle on the web for $14.00 plus shipping.

The second one is by Shraner and is called "The Art of Wheel Building". Amazon.com has that one for around $16 or $17.

Although I do own a truing stand, I prefer to do minor wheel tuneups or single spoke replacements on the bike itself, using the brake pads as a guide.

The good Park truing stand is on sale at Performance for $135.00 from $160.00, that is the cheapest I have ever seen it. I would recommend the Park, it ain't cheap but it will last a lifetime.

I tried building my CPX 30 , 32 holes and was doing the three triangle, but the shop were I bought the spokes gave me a wrong measurement, so I cannot finished it, or complete the job so I end up asking the shop to do it for me, it only dawn at Me now I think that mechanic sabotage me, he actually gave me a short spoke so that I have to ask him to build the wheel , for me.....It is not my nature to be thinking negatively against people but now I really think he really sabotage me on this one
