General Cycling Discussion - Oakleys???

I have been wondering wether it would be worth the money to buy a pair of Oakley Lance Armstrong edition sunglasses for MSRP=$200, or getting a pair of regular Oakley M Frames for $140? Whats your suggestion?

I think there both overpriced but then I'm cheap. If you want them and can afford them then get them:cool:

I am all about the twenties they are great for everything. They cost me about 190 cnd so that would resonable for people in the states. I am also aware that they are etremely common and everyone has them but you can get so many variation in frames and lens colour that it isn't that bad. check them out they are definelty something to consider

Wjhat's the advantage of the LA model? Well... it's the LA model and... It has LA's signature on it and...

If you must buy Oakleys' get the standard M-Frames with a couple of lenses.

Having said that, and as much as I like Oakleys, I do find them to be insanely over-priced, and $140 for M-Frames seems steep,considering that you can get them from Oakley's online store for $105.

I have a pair of Ryders (http://www.ryderseyewear.com/default.htm) with three sets of lenses [grey, orange and clear] that I got for C$55 [$35 US]. The lenses are polycarbonate and quite good. They're not quite as sturdy as Oakleys, perhaps, but they're 1/4 the price [when you factor in the extra lenses] and do the job just as well.

Depending on what color and frame style you choose for you M-frames, it can cost you anywhere from $100 to $175. I would like the kind of frame that folds, which the LA edition ($200) does not do. So I guess I will just go with a $100 pair of M-frames.:D

I don't really like oakleys. .. . they look nice and all but they are way to much for me. 150 and up . . i dont know that a bit pricy. what i wear are a pair of $75 kenneth cole glasses. I think that they look nicer that oaklyes.

as for your questions, i would just go with the m-class ones. do you really need the signature ones?

I'm wearing some mexican oakeys, look just like oakleys (metal frame) but only cost 10 dollars , picked 'em up in Cozumel. Have had them 4 years now.:cool:

Imitation Oakleys, eh. Not a bad idea, if they look just like real Oakleys. But do those mexicans give the same optical quality as Oakleys? Probably not. But I might just get me a pair of mexican Oakleys.

The mex oakleys have been a good pair of shades, minor scratches in the past year but I doubt if I get any uv protection.

I'd say go with the regular M-frames. No matter what, they will be over priced, but unless you live in Texas, stay away from LA's. I personally like the Pro-M-frames better, I'm not sure which you're going for. I've bought mine right from a friend w/connections, so I avoid the awefully high prices. But, if you go for folding or non-folding, the M-frames offer the best protection for cycling.

I've got Bolle, bulletproof is all I have to say.
I like the polarized lens but I primarily bought them
for diving.
I also like the Rudy Projects (kerosene) they seem
to be quite popular.

I have known many people with Oakley problems ... they are fragile and expensive. Granted, they will replace them if you send them in, but what a hassle. I have had a pair of Smith sliders for years ... replacement lenses are $20, they stick to your face like glue and they are tough as nails.

smiths are the best and you can buy them for 99 or less

Ditto. I looked at Oakleys for a long time trying to decide what to buy, but for the money, the quality just wasn't there. (IMO)
Found some Smith Sliders on sale for $50 with 3 sets of lenses. They have been great so far. I think you pay a lot just to have that little "O" on the frames. ;)

Serengeti drivers.
I got them for driving, they are so easy on my eyes I use them on the bike as well. They are the easiest on the eyes of any glasses I have ever tried. I don't get eye fatigue on long drives in bright light with them like I have with other glasses (cheap and expensive). Optically fine, can't ask for a better glasses.
Just my 2 cents worth.

From what I understand, the problem you have with glasses like the Serengetis (spelling?) is that the lenses are glass. In the event of a crash or hard hit from a rock(having a rock ricochet immediately in front of your eye is a surreal experience), they may shatter.

I've had a lot of glasses over the years. I tend to be abusive on mine. Better them then my eyes!

Regardless, I do think Oakleys are way over priced! But if you like the fit and the style, go for it!

I've used Smith Sliders, Buzzsaws, and I really like the interchangable lenses! Lost those!

My current glasses are Native Dash SS. They're a good quality lense, interchangeable lenses and the grey lense is polarized! Cost is right around $100.00. I'm happy with mine!
