"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Would you race in this event???

Plans are being made to bring back a popular local race in Michigan called "The Big Mack Attack".

This 167-mile Team Time Trial that started out as a bet between two cycling clubs and blossomed into a pretty extreme race in the 1980s and early 90s.
It's not a relay. It's a true 4-man team time trial. Three of the four riders must finish the race.

The winning time is just under 7 hours. The course is relatively flat and runs from Mt. Pleasant to Mackinaw City.

Just trying to get a check on the interest level. Would you race it?

I rode it in 1987. It was the hardest thing I've done on a bike, but probably the coolest, too.
It's amazing how hard you'll push yourself when there are three people counting on you.

Sounds pretty cool but I can't take the time to travel there much less put a team together.

It sounds awesome, unfortunately I am no where close to being the caliber of rider it would take to compete in something like that.

Our team finished in 6th place with a time of 7:21.48
I was a Cat 3 at the time. I'd like to try it now knowing what I do now.

My legs hurt for weeks afterward. Luckily, it's held in the Fall at the end of the season.

The hardest part of this sort of an event is finding three other guys who can commit to doing it. There's nothing worse than going through all the training and preparation only to have someone crap out on you just days before the event.
You have to commit months in advance and then follow through.

Perhaps the coolest part comes at the 150-mile point when you start pushing each other...not physically, though that's not a bad idea.

I'd like to do that! I could possibly get 3 other guys to form a team ... is is done by category? No way I could finish that in 7 hours!!

How much food did you have to take with you or are there stations that you can grab munchies from along the way?

Wow, what an event. I'm not sure I have want it takes to ride 167 miles, let alone try to do it as a TTT.

While that sounds cool, the level of commitment is extreme. 167 miles. Four-man team. Location too far for some. How many teams typically rode in each edition?

No way. I need to have my arm twisted just to enter shorter TTs so there is no way I'd even think of doing that. Just to much work to get ready for an effort like that and I don't really care for TTs in the first place.

Wow! That's close to 24 mph average. I guess that would one an idea what it's like to ride a long flat stage in The Tour de France.

It's a beast of an event that requires a lot of cooperation from several law enforcement jurisdictions. That's what killed it years ago.

SewUpNut is right; it's as close as you can get to riding a Tour stage insofaras length/speed is concerned.

Maby Law Enforcement would help sponsor the Event, or a Team? Some law inforcement involvement up front would help with the road use issues, ect. Are there any current "Bike Safety" initiatives at the state level this could tie into? Thinking as a visibility or promotional thing.

Actually, we're trying to tie in with the D.A.R.E. program through the Michigan County Sheriff's Association. We scratch their back, they watch ours.
