Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - putting the ring on the our spot

So I have this old schwinn paramount mountain bike.

Its in good shape, but the cantis are driving me nuts, so I'm going with v-brakes. however, the shifter pods are integrated into the levers...so I'd need new shifter pods too.

I dont feel like doing that. so, what I've decided to do instead is to make it SS. I would just take off the out outter and inner rings and leave it at that, but what fun would that be? So I'm thinking about putting the middle ring on the outside and buying a new BB spindle to space it over.

does anyone know how much shorter I'd need to have the BB spindle be to do this? I'd be a lot of help to me.

you dont need a new bb ... if you use the freehub, get a bunch of spacer so that the cog sits all the way on the right of the freehub body to line up with the outermost chainring position

You can also get an adaptor that will let your canti levers work with V-brake calipers. Don't remember what it's called, but I ran one for a while before I got v levers for my SS.

Need a 'travel agent'. Most shops should have them. Will allow you to use Canti levers with V-brakes.

i've ridden a bike (a cross bike...so a bit different) that had v-brakes + travel agent and STI levers, and there wasn't a whole ton of power to them, not enough to lock the front wheel, for sure. I wasn't overly impressed. plus I'm getting levers and brakes together for a good price.

as for spacing over the freehub, I might do that. However, another objective I wanted to achieve was a possibly lower Q-factor...since I'm used to a road bike.

man, my room IS clean. except for that trashcan there...Seriously, its been dirtier, and its a LOT cleaner then my room at home...

My question too. I have an old Waterford Paramount mtb and it is a lovely mess of a beat up old steel lugged bike. If squeeking is what drives you nutz about the cantis then just toe the brake pads in. I have been wanting to SS mine out for awhile but just have not gotten around to it. The old Suntour 6 speed stays in one gear anyway so I may as well.
