Introductions - New from Atlanta...

Hello all,

I am new to the forums, and trying to get into cycling. I have been researching and test riding bikes for a few weeks now and have narrowed my search down to a few bikes in the $700-$800 range.

Look forward to bugging you all for useful tips and harrasing you with stupid questions :D

You may want to look into joining the Southern Bicycle League. They have rides all over the city with varying degrees of difficulty from beginner to advanced. The rides tend to be quite social with food and beer after. Go to bikesbl.org and check out the calendar. You can actually do the rides without being a member if you just want to try it out.

I am also new to this forum, and from the Atlanta area, but not exactly new to cycling. I have been cycling for most of my 58 years and you would think I would eventually get good at it. I like to ride the Silver Comet but also ride in many areas of Atlanta as well. I am always looking for someone that is as slow as I am to enjoy a slow pedal anywhere.

I'm 60 years old and am sometimes slow. Just depends on my mood, the weather, how hard I rode the day before... :)
I usually ride from home in Decatur to Stone Mountain but hit the Silver Comet Trail occasionally.
One of these days the Atlanta area BF members will organize a group ride on the SC Trail. Any takers??

Congrats on the LBS mechanic job, alcahueteria. That sounds like my ideal job. One of these days I am going to retire and become a part time LBS mechanic and full time rider. Since you go to tech, do you ever pick up the path foundation trail at 5th and Juniper and take it out to Stone Mountain. Not a bad ride. Jeff

Welcome to BikeForums. What bike shop are you working at? I work for the Atlanta Bicycle Camapign and visit most area bike shops (on business of course ;) ) every month or so, delivering newsletters, bumper stickers, etc. Maybe I'll see you.

I live with a couple of guys and I have talked them into biking as well, and we have gone to a new triail every weekend since I got my bike. It's been great.

My work is only 3 blocks from Mike's store (Intown Bicycles). I was there on Monday. He has 3 new employees and I met 2 of them, Rob and Dominique (or was it David?). Age does things to your mind. :eek:

Path? What path are you referring to? The Silver Comet Trail or the Atlanta to Stone Mountain bike path?
SCTrail is paved. It's a rails to trails project. Runs from Smyrna (north side of Atlanta) to the Alabama state line. At the state line it meets with the Chief Ladiga Trail that goes west toward Birmingham.

The Atlanta-Stone Mtn bike path is a mixture of roads and sidewalk-like bike paths that runs from downtown Atlanta to Stone Mountain. I ride this one every weekend.

Hey, alcahueteria, the Atlanta/Stone Mountain path is as was pointed out about half and half roads and path. The roads are pretty tame though and there are enough cyclists so that the motorists know how to act. The path is marked at every turn by a a green and white informational sign that says Path and an arrow for directions. I believe from 5th and Juniper to Stone Mountain and back is about 38 miles if memory serve me correctly. Jeff

38 miles, I might have to wait until I get somewhat of a road bike to go for that, or atleast some slicks. Yeah, it sounds like you met me, Dominic. I don't work today (thursday), but I do work friday, if you stop by remind me who you are, I just can't remember everyone's names that I meet in there. Mike knows so many people in that come in that store, it's insane. We do have a guy named David that works there, but I don't think he was there on monday. I've seen some stuff about the silver comet trail, but haven't taken that one either.

Stone Mtn is about 11 miles from my house, so my round trip is 27-38 miles, depending on how many laps I do around the mountain.

Today is Thrusday and Rob is working so I'll stop by tomorrow and say "hi".
BTW: I was the "old" guy with the Jamis Nova (see the picture below). I stopped in to pick up some egg beater cleats that Mike ordered for me.
