Bicycle Mechanics - the bicycle industry for dummies?

I'm wondering if anyone knows of some source of information (i.e. a book) that would give a sort of general overview of the bicycle industry. I've been a mechanic (if you could call me that... i'd say more of an "apprentice") for almost a year, which isn't very long, in the scheme of things, yet i feel like i ought to know a more about this stuff. what i'm talking about is, for example, comparing SRAM to shimano. i want to know what different companies and products in the bicycle world are "known for".

i realize that i'm probably asking for a vast amount of information that is only learned through experience. it also could be true that this website is itself a good place to find what i'm looking for, but i'm just wondering if there are any books or magazines or websites that are particularly good at reviewing/overviewing the bicycle industry.

Do you currently work for a shop? If so, they should subscribe to BRAIN (Bicycle Retailer and Industry News (http://www.bicycleretailer.com/bicycleretailer/index.jsp)). Take home the last 12 issues... good reading.

Other then that, read read and read some more. Magazines (while imho, not always worth there $$$) can provide you with some great information, as well as websites and forums such as this one. But when it comes down to it, nothing is better then personal experience. So put on alot of miles, and get your hand on as many bikes and bicycle parts as possible... tell the GF / Wife its "research". ;)

I would also try to talk to the "old guys" in the shop where you work, or that come in on occasion. That would be a little slower, but at least you'd be getting it from the "horses" mouth.
