what concert(s) have you been to strictly for the opening act? Even paying full price for the big name, just to see the other group?

I paid top dollar back in the day when INXS was popular just to see PIL (Public Image Limited).

I can't think of the others, but know there were.

So, how about you?

I went to see third day to see Jennifer Knapp open.
Also saw Jennifer earlier that year at a music conference, Just her and her guitar.

I would have gone to see the Scorpions this year to see Keith Emerson open with his new band, buit I had to work that night. :(

Spent 65 bucks on a ticket to see the opening act of the rush concert. Of Course they opened for themselves :D Best 65 buck I have ever spent.

Saw Bad Company (headliner) and Damn Yankees (Ted Nugent & Tommy Shaw et al) opened for them. Blew Bad Company away. What manager in his right mind would let his act follow Terrible Ted?

I went to see Robin Trower, then stayed for Peter Frampton.

Seaweed and Greenday opening for Bad Religion.

The Cult for Metallica.

NIN for Peter Murphy, although I did like Peter Murpy, too.

For that matter: House of Love for Peter Murphy.

Snakefinger and the Vestal Virgins so I could see NoMeansNo.

Snakefinger turned out to be a recording member of the Residents.
Wicked hippy psyce acid funk, Weeeee! They were GREAT!

Ever see punks dance funk? Funny stuff.

And one of the Wright bro's from NoMeansNo said in all the tours, the only band that ever opened for them and made them WORK HARD as the headliner was the band -Victims Family.

Can't recall ever doing this. Went to a No Doubt show and Red Five opened(not impressed). Saw Metallica and Jerry Cantrell opened(great show, but some idiot cut their-Cantrell's-mics--we were louder than the performers, esp. on the AIC stuff they played). Went to Lollapalooza, but I don't remember much-too much alcohol.... Attended Ozzfest '99 and saw some awesome bands, but I was really there to see a reunited Black Sabbath, thankyouverymuch. I'm going to see Lewis Black next Friday and I'm pretty sure he'll open and close(although I don't think I want him to sing). Does that count?

I paid good money back in 1988 to see Smashing Pumpkins at a bar in college. They opened for Camper Van Beethoven.

Wow, I can't believe someone else on this forum has heard of Johhny Lydon's PiL. I don't remember much of them.

Saw Bob Dylan open for Paul Simon a few years ago. Went for Paul Simon, but Dylan was good.

Almost all the shows I have been to were all-ages punk bands when I was a teenager, I don't like arena/stadium type "concerts". I saw the Chemical Brothers at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, about as "big" a concert I can stand. Not a big fan of their's now but really enjoyed it at the time. err, what was this thread about.

Ohh, favorite opening band was Bikini Kill opening for Babes in Toyland 11 years ago at the Gargoyle in St. Louis.

Out of PIL, I liked Jah Wobble the bassist, did some cool solo stuff.

The band I do visuals for opened for the Chem Bros @ UBC, Van.

Trower = awesome. Frampton not so much. Doubt I would've stayed for more than 2-3 Frampton songs.
.

NIN for Peter Murphy, although I did like Peter Murpy, too.
hmm, while I like NIN, I'm a much bigger Murphy/Bauhaus fan.

Funny, I was never much of Sex Pistols fan, but I'm die hard Lydon/Rotten and Malcolm McLaren fan. McLaren has to be the most diverse talent ever.

I went looking for Bikini Kill based on your recommendation that they're similar-ish to Le Tigre, but haven't found 'em yet.

Paid to see Run DMC open for G Love, but their flight was late so G Love opened for Run DMC.

PJ Harvey open for Live
Motorhead open for Iron Maiden, although Maiden put on one of the best show ever.
Robert Belfour open for T-Model Ford

I went and saw primus and the pixies. Left before that wretched dreadlocked whiner in Jane's Addiction could ruin my night.

Did you see PIL when Steve Vai played for them?

Nope..but I did see Randy Rhoads with Ozzy shortly before his death.

Never been to one of the PIL shows =concerts started to freak me -I'm o.k as a tech, not into the big crowd scene other side of the barrier.

I've always liked PIL.
Being an old punk -yes it was obligitory to OWN 'Never mind the Bollocks' but no one listened to it much..really awful noise.

I still listen to :The Damned, The Stranglers, The Fall, Big Black, Joy Division, Bad Brains, Shockabilly, Phantom Tollbooth, MudHoney, Blind Idiot God, Crass.

Crass is THE political punk group. Lousy music -the lyric\diatribe was amazing.

Pixies are getting back together, read an interview with Frank Black -I think it was some lame men's mag (Details possibly). He said they are just doing it for the money. Said they have turned offers to reunite down many times, but this offer was simply too much to pass up. Not sure if he has spoken with Kim Deal, et al.

On related note: I find him winey, too; however, the new Thievery Corporation album has a track on which he sings and sings with sincerety and does so well.

I'm not sure that he actually played with them. I believe he just recorded with them. But I could be wrong.
