BMX - Poped tube - what should I get and where from?

I poped my tube racing with a friend today. Any ideas of a good tube to get? The tire looks a little cracked too, should I replace that aswell? The rim does have a small dent in it too. I really don't want to replace it though since then I should replace the back to, and that would be to expensive. BTW: the bike is an '03 GT Performer, and I would like to stick with the stock parts, unless upgrades aren't that much more.

Stock parts are stupid... Which is exactly what I was when I started. Parts cost money and for the same money, or a tiny bit more you can often get MUCH better quality.

Look at www.danscomp.com for some ideas on some decent tires. I personally use Primo Walls and love them.

For tubes... I use the cheap ones that Dans sells. The main thing is keeping your air pressure up above 50PSI AT LEAST. I run above 80PSI at all times.

New rims require new wheel building and Odyssey makes some good rims as well as some other companies out there.

I usually order tubes in bulk from Albes. 10 tubes for $15, or for $1.95 each.

I took off the wheel today; the tire is cracked and the tube has two pretty big holes. So i'll at least get a new tire and tube. I spun the wheel without the tire on it and it wobbled a notable amount. Should I replace the rim too? Would it be ok to replace just the rim, not the hub and spokes?

Most will all most likely true rims, But I would just make sure it's not a bike shop that favors Mountain bikes over BMX. Because you would want someone in BMX to tru your rims.

No, you wouldn't. A true wheel is a true wheel. It doesn't matter if a guy who specializes in tandems is truing it, if he knows what he's doing, he can get it done properly.

Ok. Thanks for all the info. Last question (I hope, lol). My tire says 20 - 21 on the side. What does that mean? Is it millimeters or somthing? Does the "21" actually mean 2.10"?

It says 20x2.1, most likely, with 20" being the bead (inner) diameter and 2.1" being the thickness of the tire.

You may not need a spoke wrench. I true mine with the tire off with a slightly modified screwdriver. Ive done it both ways I prefere it this way. Give it a try, if you are thinking of replacing the wheel, you have nothing to lose by trying it, and it'l be good experience if you haven't it done it.

It's a bit harder to modify a screwdriver than it is to buy a $2.99 spoke wrench at your LBS...

Well, I sitting there needing to tru the wheel, couldn't find my spoke wrench, didn't feel like looking for anhour for it. I noticed the nipples were slotted. My bench grinder was handy, easy as that. ANd driving to the store to buy one which would have been faster than hunting through my garages would have cost me $10 in gas.

That's just ridiculous. A solid wheel is a solid wheel, no matter what its intended purpose...road, track, triathlon, downhill, BMX. BMX wheels are about the SIMPLEST wheels to lace, true and maintain...they're very tolerant of improper tension thanks to beefy hubs, overbuilt rims and extra spokes (even 36 is more than most mountain and road wheels these days), where certain 20-spoke road wheels will explode if they're not tensioned and trued JUST so. A good professional wheelbuilder who happens to specialize in road wheels will be able to build and true BMX wheels just fine, better in most cases than your average high-school BMXer working part time at the local shop.

Yes. Road wheels are usually harder, thanks to:

- rear wheel dish gives you higher tension on drive side spokes
- fewer spokes means greater spacing between spokes, meaning you have to do more with less to true
- unusual spoking patterns, like Mavic with their radial lacing on the drive side and 2x on the non-drive or god help us all Campy's G3 spoking pattern
- aluminum instead of brass nipples (PTOING!)
- aluminum spokes on some wheels like Ksyrium SSLs
- bladed spokes have to be held in place and properly aligned
- road wheels are overall much more fragile than BMX wheels
- screwing up is usually much more expensive

dude go to walmart buy a tube or two then if you want new tires stay there at walmart and buy some ****ty ass mongoose tires or if you want you couls buy tubes tires and rims from http://www.danscomp.com/ or you could just patch the tube which would be easy too its basically up to you
