I believe they were comparable with Tiagra-105 in their day. I've got 15 year old Exage levers on my bike, and they work fine. Brakes and brake levers are different than brifters and derailers, in that the ONLY real difference,(unless you go SUPERCHEAP,)between entry level and top-of-the-line is weight. They aren't made of carbon fiber or adamantium, and they won't brake FOR you, but they should work fine. ;)

I've got some Exage mountain bike levers, and an Exage rear derailleur from my first real mountain bike in '92. The derailleur still works, and the brake levers, though MTB, are still functional as well. I've scavenged them for parts over the years, but they'll still pull brakes to a rim.

I got Exage on my mountainbike... everything worked just fine with a bit of maintenance until a hammock fell over my bike in a storm, now my rear derailleur is dead. :)
But in general, just keep it maintained and you will be fine.

Funny you folks are saying Exage on a MTB, my friend has a Schwinn 564 with a complete Exage road group set.

I have an Exage road brake on my fixed gear, rear brake up front, no less. I scavenged it from the used bin at my LBS. It's actually been a real champ other than it was sort of a pain to install because the bolt's not long enough to reach through the entire fork tube. But it's got more than enough stopping power for me.
