I started to ride in the snow on the bike path with a mountain bike. It was too deep in some places.
Ride walk ride walk, for about a mile. The snow was wet, heavy, and stuck to everything. Even the hubs.
Went home (another mile ride/walk), got a bike without studded tires and went for a road ride. Lots of wet snow on everything else, but the road was completely melted, just a little water.
A strange ride, but a ride. Any ride is a good ride. :)

Nice photos! Where are those?
I wish i could ride around here. We got that storm, too, but I can't ride after work because it's dark and I simply hate cold weather. I figure I should be able to start riding by mid-April

This is East Providence Rhode Island and near by. At the Northern end of Narragansett bay.
It is a lot of work to get dressed up and to get the right lights etc. It took me years to really get everything set so I can ride in any weather. What happened to spring?
Purty! I miss wet heavy snow!
Purty! I miss wet heavy snow!
I have plenty that you can have. It's right out in my driveway. Help yourself any time. :)
great pics... I grabbed 5 of them for desktop background.... thanks!
ah, you have WHITE snow! we have brown and black mounds piled up between the street and the sidewalk. our snow gets soooo nasty after a short time.
We haven't had much snow this year (I think we've set a record, we've had a little over 18 inches so far and normal is about 56 inches) but it looks simular to that here right now. Only it's the crunchy stiff stuff. Thanks, great pics!
Really nice pics! We got a bunch of that white stuff around here the last couple days. We're supposed to keep getting it too! Oh well, guess i'll keep the bike on the trainer for now.
Come on spring!
Any ride is a good ride. :)

Really nice photos, never got out yesterday myself so it was like being there.
Even recoginzed one of my favorite stopping places on the EBBP?

The little bridge?
My house is about 1/4 mile from the next road intersection going north from that bridge. It was actually pretty nice yesterday. Maybe it just felt that way because I was riding.
Oh man....2manybikes...now I'm definitely going to fix up a fixie studded tire beater for next winter....
yours.....2fewbikes

2funny
Where is Florence?
Thanks. :)
The little bridge?
I think that spot is where I stop sometimes. Hope to get up there on the 20th, if not still snow covered.

If you are concerned about the conditions before you come up, let me know.
Thanks.
On the 20th, I hope to go from Newport to the NBW ride at East Providence Cycle. If the path is still snowy (and I have no doubt it won't be,) I might take roads from th MH bridge up to E Providence.
And I have this crazy idea about a ride around the state, one long ride in one day. I've done most of my intended route in sections, but the EBBP will be part of the route. The first nice day I have off I am going.
Thanks.

I have not been paying attention lately, that must be the annual show too. ?
There's so many nice places to ride in this state it's hard to narrow down what to see. In the above freezing weather I do at least one over a century ride every week. And usually another 75 mile day. I still have so much to see it's amazing. When I ride from here down to Charlestown I usually go rt 2 with one small detour. Lots of merging with traffic on rt. 2. It's about 45 miles from my house to the right turn to Shannock that goes past the waterfall. (Shannock rd.?)
Once in a while I go east to rt. 1A on 102 and south down to the eastern end of the bike path and west on the path. That adds about 10 miles.
What approximate route are you planning?
.
What approximate route are you planning?
I would start in Newport, maybe at Ft Adams and then ride up Aquidneck Island, across the MH Bridge, up the EBBP, the somehow head from Providence to Burrileville(not my riding territory so I might need help planning that section,) but would end up in tri-state corner on Rte 100 near Wallum Lake.
From there would head down the western edge of the state-most of the more scenic routes are either dirt or gravel so the route would have to be adjusted for a road bike, at expense of scenery and adding more hills.( ie: Plain Meeting House and/or 165)
Then I would go along the southern coast of RI through beach areas, nice areas that could be cut off (if tired)of by going straight cross to the NK side of the Jamestown bridge, where the ride would end at the 138/Rte 1A intersection, where the days ride would end.
A rough approximation would be
Newport to Providence: 45
Providence to Lake Wallum: ??30
Lake Wallum to Ashaway: 55
Ashaway to Rte 1A/138 intersection: 65? Scenic, 30 something straight across.
Total: 165-190?
Those are approximate miles.
The most I have ever done is like 106, but am ready to try a longer ride this year. The first good day.
You ride from EP to Shannock? That is some haul.
<snip> What happened to spring?
It moved to Montana! Its been in the 50s for a couple of weeks now! Supposed to be 60 today and tomorrow! Great weather to get an early start on the training, but bad weather for the wild fire season to come. :(

My house to Shannock, plus a 20 mile ride with friend and back about 110 miles or so using rt. 2, about 120 using some of 1A. To George's Restaurant in Galilee and back is about 127 miles using a pretty direct route.
Do you have the state bike map? They are free at the Bike shop on the bike path (all bike shops) and on line too.
Fort Adams to the Old Train Depot building on the Bike path. That's at the road intersection just north of the bridge we were talking about. If you go up West Main road It's about 33-35 miles. I never go on East or West Main except for short distances. They are two of the worst roads in the state, even for car accidents. I go between them down the middle (about the same distance) or along the east side of the island by the water That is about 40 miles. Or including the Burma road bike path on the west side which is great, is about 33-35 miles.
There are many options from here up to Burrillville. Using the Blackstone River Bikeway and through Cumberland is a good way, Just for today I'm going to skip that. When ever you would like detailed directions through Providence, or anything else just let me know.
Using Park Ave. out of Providence all the way to the intersection of rt.102 is about 30 miles. 102 up to 100 to Wallum lake is about 18 miles maybe ?? So about 83 - 85 miles going north and also west.
Going back south I like 44 west to 94 south, back to 102 about 18 miles to 102 in Foster. It's a nice road.
I guess you're thinking maybe 102 to 14 to 117 to West Greenwich center. Last summer I went down the dirt From the W. G. Center to Esgoheag Hill road on a Mountain Bike. I THINK you could do it on a road bike with great care. Very slowly.
Down to 138 about 21 miles and another 21 if go 138 to the bike path to the water and up.
About 60 miles plus map error and exploring. Total around 145 plus. I like your estimate of 165 miles. I think that is about as close as you can come to an estimate. That's perfect.
Sounds wonderful. Don't forget the digital camera !! :)
I'm sure you already know you may be coming home in the dark. Last summer I kept using up the 4 hour run time on my HID light every week. I bought a new one that will do 8 hours. I'm still broke. Sorry about the long post, now I'm thinking about my favorite subject.
Thanks again.
I have a route up Aquidneck that I don't know street names of, but I know the route, going north I head up the east side of the island and am only on 138 for two short sections. Hairy. The rest of the way is pretty good.
I have a reliable light but would hate even to even carry it. It is a lead acid battery. Would have to plant the batteries where I think I would use them the end of the ride.
I also have a bail out planned, I will go near my house at about mile 120. I can't start at my house because of the bridges, I want to start in Newport and end in NK to avoid any bridge crossing issues.
That section along the western edge of the state is some of the best riding around, I have done it on my mountain bike too. Once my wife dropped me off at the MA border, south of Douglas State Park and I rode to the ocean in Charlestown, that was a perfect day and one of the best rides I have ever been on. I don't have that light mountain bike anymore.
On a road bike one would have to skip those nice roads and get on 102 or do some o the back roads and hit Plain House rd, if you have ever done that on a long ride it is no fun.
I have never ridden that far before but am going to try this trip on the first day good day I have off.
I have a good trip route suggestion from a friend, from Providence to Burrilleville section.
Unfortunately this is too far for most people I know and I go too slow to interest others.
Thanks again.

It sounds great. Let me know how it was when you are done. last summer I did the R.I. North South trail
From the Beach in Charlestown up to Douglas Mass. It is in the same area you mention. Or did you do part of that too? I still have not done the very Northern section of the trail. I have been on the computer a lot this winter as I have been very sick. Normally long and slow is my thing too. But I have not been on the bike much since December. I don't know what the future of my health is, or I would ask if you wanted some company some time on a long slow ride. Take a couple of nice pictures for me if you can. !!
I'll come back and put up some links to my Yahoo web sight with some of my pictures of the North South trail rides. We did mountain bikes and off road mainly, so we did a few days a section at a time.
Have a great ride, I'm jealous. :) I want to go too, but I can't. :)
Edit post: Some photos of the R.I. North South trail, originally a hiking trail. Modified for Bikes and horses.

Sorry to hear of your health problems, I hope that you recover and get back on the bike. I was off the bike a few years ago for a month and it was another month before I could do ten miles without being exhausted and months more to get energy back for longer rides.
I paralleled the North south trail, from the Mass border. I missed a turn and ended up missing George Washington State area and instead came down Jackson Scholhouse to 44, which had just been converted to 2 lanes. From there I went down Rte 44, Burgess Rd, then Shippee Schoolhouse(where that pack of mean dogs resides) then down Cucumber, Kennedy, Barbs Hill, Rice City, Hopkins Hollow,Newport, Hazard, Escoheag, Woody Hill, then North Rd and then I just took paved roads to Charlestown. It was a nice trip and just thinking about makes me want to plan another similar one.
In any case, I will probably have to skip some of those scenic dirt roads and stay on pavement to conserve time and energy.
Thanks for the photos, I will look at them tonight as we lost power last night so I had no computer.
This is like a real winter? I got home last night with just enough time for a short ride, I started off in light rain and 29, when I got back it was a blizzard with snow all over and chilled. as I did not really dress for such a ride.

Hearing about your plans to do your ride is a great way to pass the time when I can't go. :D
It was BAD last night.
I just looked at your North/South trail photos and they are really nice, I enjoyed them. Thanks. Made me want to get up there again. We hiked the trail two years ago and are talking about doing it again this year too.
Did you do the RI NEMBA ride of the North South Trail?

No I didn't know anything about it. I don't do a lot of mountain biking. Not hours or miles. I still have a little bit left at the very northern end to finish. I hope to do that this summer. I had such a great time doing it!! We missed a couple of turn offs where the horses and bikes were supposed to go around the boulder fields. :o I'm sure there is a lot that we never saw. Hiking it must be great.
I still marvel at all the things that I see, that are new, without even leaving the state! Some of the stuff on that trail was great. Like the small covered bridge with benches! It's nice to talk about
