General Cycling Discussion - Raleigh cyclist hit by car but not hurt

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Got off very lucky, but anyone who knows Raleigh knows that Falls of the Neuse is a really bad place to ride, especially a recumbent (I'm assuming the "three wheels" cited in the story means it's a recumbent and not a really strange bike). which brings up an interesting point - are recumbents, by nature of their low-profile design, more apt to be hit because motorists simply can't see them - especially motorists driving SUVs the size of elephants?

"A motorist on Pacific Drive attempted to turn right onto Falls of the Neuse when she collided with Forsley, said Jim Sughrue, Raleigh police spokesman. Neither she nor Forsley was cited, he said. "

I bet if he was in a car or on a motorcycle someone would have been cited.

Three wheeled bike? Recumbents I am familiar with have two wheels, right? Maybe I am delusional, but I am thinking of a big trike when I think three wheels...

Here's the last line from the story:

"This is the fifth time Forsley has been hit while riding in Raleigh." (Emphasis added)

And yet no one seems to get cited.
No respect for cyclists in this country.

i'd say that he might need to be a bit more careful. regardless of who's fault it is, you can get hurt pretty bad by getting hit by a car.

I also read that in the N&O this morning. I nearly spat out my Quaker Oats when I saw that line. That dude needs one of those orange-triangle go cart flags.

Semi-Related: I was overservered by a waitress at the Piper's Tavern on Falls of the Neuse road one night recently, and did the right thing and took a cab home. I rode my bike back over the next morning to get my car back, and nearly lost my life three or four times on the way over due to cars on that road. That is a bad place to ride, and riding a 'bent there sounds suicidal.

That is Drew, one of our customers. He was severly brain injured many years ago and he rides a Trail mate trike(Think big and retired Floridian) to get around as he cannot walk well. He is pretty active(physically and mentally) and runs up and down Falls all the time, usually on the sidewalk, to shop and go to the gym. You would have to be blind or a fool to miss him, the trike is bright blue and he only goes five or six miles an hour.
One of our other customers, Dave LeDuc, T- boned a car that turned in front of him a couple of weeks ago. He went through the glass, broke four ribs and his shoulder.

That gives a little better idea of the situation. I would have never gathered that from the story in the N&O. Good call on that post!

That wouldn't be the same Dave LeDuc, multiple national record holder would it? Hope he heals well and soon.

That would be the same Dave. He dropped a bike off the other night and seemed to be getting around ok if slowly, it will be a while before he gets back on the road tho.
