I just came across this new Puma Folding Bike (http://www.joshrubin.com/coolhunting/archives/2005/03/first_glimpse_t.html) . Looks pretty cool at a decent price.

From the website:
Puma, Vexed and Biomega teamed up to create this highly functional, yet totally minimal bike. I had the chance to try it out last week and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the looks would exceed the comfort and function. As it turns out, they're evenly matched. This team has managed to create an urban apartment friendly, folding bike that rides like it has a regular single piece frame. With one gear, oversized tires and upright handlebars, it's perfect for conquering city streets.

The Puma Bike will be produced in limited quantities, is available in black or silver and should be available in May 2005. It will only be available at Puma stores and will retail for $775.

Biomega uses interesting frames. Imagine this one with S&S couplers to fold it. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/01/biomega_biolove.php Notice that it also has a shaft drive.

ok I quote : "The latter dispenses with that greasy old chain, yet Biomega reckon it has “less transmission loss than the average chain.”

Anybody who comes up with such bull in order to sell their stuff, is ridicoulous at best.
Chain drive has 5 % loss, Shaft drive has 25-30 % loss... give or take a few percent.

Meaning if they lie about such a blatant easy thing, you can bet that they lie about other stuff as well.
plastic alloy ? c'mon .... glue with rubber balls in it to keep it flexible????

The folding bike they offer, is a copy of a US made product.... they had problems keeping it stiff without the folding mechanism and never sold any substantial number... combined with the biomega plastic alloy frame halves , glued together with rubber balls .. I have serious doubts

ok enuff rant..... disclaimer : people know that I am a Dahon dealer, I am biased...lol

It looks nice the proof will be in the riding.

Most interesting, from the website:
The Down Tube wire is a structural part of the frame – integrating the locking mechanism in the frame subsequently rendering the bicycle non functional if someone breaks the lock to steal the bicycle.

Yikes! It's got 24" tires and STILL weighs over 37 pounds!
